This is one fantastic song! I love the funky groove and lyrics. I am having a pool party soon, and this song will surely get people moving!

Unlike a lot of you, I am glad for the recent overdubs. I always like hearing new things from them to see where they're at, soooo it's nice to know they are alive and kickin! And, Mick sounds damn good if you ask me. (both Micks)

Kudos to Mick for getting these songs out there!

A pool party sounds great. Are we invited?cool smiley

Doesn't it sound a bit like a Voodoo Lounge leftover?

Not to me. I really dig Pass the Wine and rather dislike Voodoo Lounge.

It is more likely that it is inspired by Eric Burdon's War: Spill The Wine Take That Girl, Tobbaco Road.

It sounds like the way Sophia Loren walks.

Yeah Green Lady ... know EXACTLY what ya mean.....

On very first play of Pass The Wine when Mick sings
I'm glad to be alive and kicking thought he sang I’m glad to be a lion king ....

But don't worry...adjusted my wig and got it second time round

The first time I heard Plundered, I thought Mick sang: I f*cked your woman for money.... cool smiley

PTW is a great track, if they had finished it earlier it could have become a highlight of a concert, but many great Exile songs were never performed as well.

In the Taylor era (I don't know how it was after that, except that they've played Shine a light live) the following songs have been performed live, and I love them (some of them I've uploaded on YT):

-Rocks off
-Rip this joint
-Tumbling dice
-Sweet Virginia
-Torn and Frayed
-Sweet black angel
-Loving cup
-Happy
-Ventilator blues
-All down the line

10 of 17 (I Just want to see his face excluded).

So who do you think is doing the 2010 noodling guitar "solo" on this track?
On "Plundered" the 2010 noodles are Taylor's. On "So Divine" the concensus
is that the 2010 noodles are Keith's. On this track, it sure doesn't sound
like Taylor or Keith. Could it be Jagger's first ever "solo"? Or has he
taken a shot at soloing before this? Anyway, just guessing here, but on this
track I think it is Jagger 2010 because its a little weird and awkward
yet still tasty, and very today-sounding, so who else could it be if it isn't Taylor or Keith?

Both Pass The Wine and So Divine sounds like recent Keith to me. My guess, anyway. Also the "country picking" on Dancing In The Light sounds like something Keith has laid down recently. It's even got a bum note in the first "section".

I would have guessed the same thing, except we have Keith clearly stating
that all he added to this effort was acoustic guitar on one track. I can't
think of any reason he would want to misrepresent his contribution, so
assuming he did not, and also assuming all the noodles on top of these
three tracks were laid down recently, I think it is within the realm
of possibility that all of it is an inexpert Jagger channeling Keith...

If Jagger could do the Muddy-style guitar on Back of My Hand, I don't see
why he couldn't have finished off these tracks Keith-style, given the luxury
of multiple takes and unlimited editing...

Because as far as we know at this point, it was only Jagger and Was in
the studio, except for the female background singers, and Taylor on
Plundered.

> 70's. Just like Aladdin Story was for So Divine.

I think that has been confirmed, but in both cases
there's more to the story...

It's an easy speculation that these tracks got their
working titles from their instrumental sound: "middle
eastern" in the case of Alladin Story, and "sexy" in
the case of "Sophia Loren".

In the Exile Deluxe lyrics thread, I argue that Jagger
did something very clever on So Divine (Alladin Story)
by weaving in elements of the original Alladin Story
into his cautionary tale of the young woman who thinks
she is So Divine and deserves everything in the world
she can possibly imagaine just because she's young and
beautiful and knows how to rub her Alladin the
right way...

So the working title has become more than just that.
It has become a true sub-title.

Well, I think in this song Jagger does something similar,
on the surface obviously writing a song about the simple
pleasures of life, especially in the face of hard times,
but at the same time rightfully crediting one of the
most important exponents of this philosophy, Sophia
Loren.

If you've forgotten, or are too young to remember, Loren
was for a while the most famous and desirable woman in
the world, rising up from extreme poverty with no
education to entrance the world with her sex appeal, wit,
and wisdom. She was synonomous with the joys of red
wine and making love.

Check out some of these Jaggerish quotes of hers:

"Sex appeal is 50 per cent what you're got and 50 per
cent what people think you've got."

"Getting ahead in a difficult profession requires avid
faith in yourself. That is why some people with mediocre
talent, but with great inner drive, go much further than
people with vastly superior talent."

"If you haven't cried, your eyes can't be beautiful."

"There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents,
the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people
you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will
truly have defeated age."

"A woman's dress should be like a barbed-wire fence: serving
its purpose without obstructing the view."

"I was blessed with a sense of my own destiny. I have never
sold myself short. I have never judged myself by other people's
standards. I have always expected a great deal of
myself, and if I fail, I fail myself."

So yeah, Pass The Wine is a great song all by itself. But it
is also a fitting tribute to Sophia Loren and her immense cultural
impact.

Her 1961 ten-page cover story in Life magazine
is available at the following link, and worth your
time for the photos if nothing else (photos that
no doubt had an impact on young Michael Philip).
The article ends with a pure don't-you-see-time-
flashing-by, glad-to-be-alive-and-kicking quote from Loren:

"Life is sad, isn't it? We pass through it so quickly.
Then suddenly you remember, and think of all the things
you can do. Here I am. I am alive. How wonderful!"
