Chuck Berry Live in what year?

Big argument on YouTube about when and where this performance was actually recorded, and what rock&roll history film the clip is from - but a great watch, anyway. (Not OT because Keith makes a brief appearance).

Chuck Berry, always great to see !!!
It's incredible how much we, the Stones fans and the rock fans globally, we owe him

I'm no expert - the general agreement in the YouTube argument seems to be:

1) It can't be from 1958 because that's a 1963 guitar (I wouldn't know)
2) It's from a TV show broadcast in France or Belgium in 1964 or 65 (which might explain the stuffed-shirt audience)
3) The clip itself is from a PBS TV series on the history of Rock & Roll - made some time ago to judge by Keith's appearance - possibly circa Voodoo Lounge?

I would say Keith's interiew was from '89 but that doesn't help the discussion about which year the Berry footage is ;-)

Chuck and audience look quite 50ish, don't you think?

Keith maybe 1963 or 64? VERY wholesome.

In any case, I defer to whatever Rockman says.

um ... stonresrule, you must be watching a different clip -
in the one Green Lady posted, the only Keith Clip is clearly from the 25x5 interview sessions in 1989.

whatever you're looking at, enjoy it! (the earliest extant Stones footage is from 1964)

the Chuck footage is from the mid-60s, which could indeed look mighty 50s-esque :E
but yeah it would be good to hear from CBII and/or Rockman about it

according to this site here: [www.songkick.com]
it appears the footage is from Universal Studios in Waterloo, Belgium on february 6th 1965

if you hunt around, the whole performance is on youtube - in pretty ratty quality, but it rocks nonetheless :E

That clip should be around 1964 or 1965. Dad was still using his ES-350T's in those days (1958) although he did make the switch to ES-335, 345 and 355's soon after. Let me dig through some of the old clips and find this one. It should be cataloged along with the others.

Here's a bit more - the quality of the video is horrid, but the quality of the performance is something else - and he did finally succeed in waking that audience up!

Yeah, watching that clip really gives another strong reason how much Chuck influenced to both Mick and Keith in performance- and musicwise. Mick has always - right from the beginning - used very effectively that 'ironic', tongue-in-the -cheek style to pose.

Here's some evidence decades later; one of the best moments I've seen from the Dartford boys in 'recent' years:

It's post '64 for sure: that's a late '64 ES-335.

so february 65 sounds right? Waterloo Belgium?

and yeah it's cool watching that stuffy audience get loosened up as the show continues -
hail hail rock & roll, eh? :E

OK with sssoul, maybe I was drunk (like on the music, ya know?) when I watched that clip. But Keith looked quite wholesome and Chuck looked young.
