OT Recommend me some new music
Posted by: Shott ()

I am stuck in the past--Jerry Lee, Otis, the Stones, and Gram Parsons. Would like one or two great new albums--have not been able to get into anything since Car Wheels on Gravel Road. What is best record by Decemberists, Drive By Truckers, or similar? What is as good as even say James Brown or Simon and Garfunkel now?

If you like Gram you might like Ryan Bingham. He has a new one coming out first week of June.

The Black Keys their last one, Attack and Release, and Dan Aubach's solo disc that just came out. He is the guitarist and vocalist for the Keys. GREAT STUFF!

Wilco...all their stuff is great!

Ryan Adams new one with the Cardinals is great!

The last Black Crowes, Warpaint is fantastic!

Arcade Fire is interesting alt indie type band. Their two albums are both very good, Neon Bible and Neighborhood.

Oh yes, they should be good! The Raconteurs are also excellent (also with Jack White).

The Raconteurs are excellent, but they're not new.

I don't know where you're from but in the age of internet you might be able to get them. Two of my favourites (both with strong Rolling Stones relations): Nikki Sudden and Carl Carlton & The Songdogs. Have a look at www.nikkisudden.com and www.carl-carlton.net

If you like great rock with a spacey edge to it then some of the stuff on the San Francisco label Tee Pee Records will be up your street. I'm currently grooving to the superbly named The Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound. Their latest and second album When Sweet Sleep Returned reminds of good old heady rock from the mid 70s. And Greater California on All The Colours sound like a cross between The Byrds and The Zombies. Light and breezy psychedelia with good tunes. Well worth checking out.

I'm also keen to hear the latest Jack White band Dead Weather. They've got pretty hot reviews over here in England.

Dan Auerbach - Keep It Hid (2009)

He's the Black Keys singer, this time with a complete band. Great record!

Black Crowes - Warpaint (2008) and Black Crowes - Warpaint Live (2009)

Whitem8 is right, this is a nice recording. If you dig Gram Parsons, you surely will like those two records. On disc two of the live album you can find a great rendition of Torn & Frayed by the Way.

Derek Trucks Band - Already Free (2009)

Very relaxed blues rock album with some great slide solo's.

Hank III (grandson of Hank Williams);
very dirty, gritty, honest, hard rockin' contemporary 'alternative' country.
Check out "Risin' Outlaw" (1999), and especially "Straight to hell" (2006)...

Note: finally on tour this summer in Europe!!! Go check'm out...
