OT: Dylan - SITMWTMBA 2009 with The Man himself
Posted by: Come On ()

I wonder if we can say that Dylan still is doing justice to his masterpiece from 1966 (best song from that year IMO). Main question: Is this video Rock'n'Roll to you? I know there are many Dylan-fans here so SPEAK OUT! as Neil told us..

I need to say that what this video represents is nothing but the most vital link to the real creative spark of rock and roll from the representive of the revolutionary 60's generation. It is so vital - and unique - that it almost shocks the safe and sure las-vegas-oriented ears of today. Not scoring any cheap nostalgy points. It's so great to have that 'mr. no compromises' still around. That man still breathes his music and songs.

The lyrics are phenomenal as well: (Of course, he doesn't sing word for word in some live versions)

Oh, the ragman draws circles
Up and down the block.
I'd ask him what the matter was
But I know that he don't talk.
And the ladies treat me kindly
And furnish me with tape,
But deep inside my heart
I know I can't escape.
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end,
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again.

Well, Shakespeare, he's in the alley
With his pointed shoes and his bells,
Speaking to some French girl,
Who says she knows me well.
And I would send a message
To find out if she's talked,
But the post office has been stolen
And the mailbox is locked.
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end,
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again.

Mona tried to tell me
To stay away from the train line.
She said that all the railroad men
Just drink up your blood like wine.
An' I said, "Oh, I didn't know that,
But then again, there's only one I've met
An' he just smoked my eyelids
An' punched my cigarette."
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end,
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again.

Grandpa died last week
And now he's buried in the rocks,
But everybody still talks about
How badly they were shocked.
But me, I expected it to happen,
I knew he'd lost control
When he built a fire on Main Street
And shot it full of holes.
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end,
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again.

Now the senator came down here
Showing ev'ryone his gun,
Handing out free tickets
To the wedding of his son.
An' me, I nearly got busted
An' wouldn't it be my luck
To get caught without a ticket
And be discovered beneath a truck.
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end,
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again.

Now the preacher looked so baffled
When I asked him why he dressed
With twenty pounds of headlines
Stapled to his chest.
But he cursed me when I proved it to him,
Then I whispered, "Not even you can hide.
You see, you're just like me,
I hope you're satisfied."
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end,
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again.

Now the rainman gave me two cures,
Then he said, "Jump right in."
The one was Texas medicine,
The other was just railroad gin.
An' like a fool I mixed them
An' it strangled up my mind,
An' now people just get uglier
An' I have no sense of time.
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end,
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again.

When Ruthie says come see her
In her honky-tonk lagoon,
Where I can watch her waltz for free
'Neath her Panamanian moon.
An' I say, "Aw come on now,
You must know about my debutante."
An' she says, "Your debutante just knows what you need
But I know what you want."
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end,
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again.

Now the bricks lay on Grand Street
Where the neon madmen climb.
They all fall there so perfectly,
It all seems so well timed.
An' here I sit so patiently
Waiting to find out what price
You have to pay to get out of
Going through all these things twice.
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end,
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again.

I'm not sure what your point is, but this is transcendent, and most definitely Rock-n-Roll! Thanks for posting.

Genius makes its own rules and rock 'n'roll should never be about playing it safe.

Why does a new version have to sound like the original? Different voice, different band, different era. The original is just a template - a performing artist should try and breathe new life into the song with each new tour. Each new performance even. Sometimes the new arrangements work, sometimes they don't - but I take my hat off to anyone who's trying to reinvent. How many other acts of any era - let alone someone with a legendary status as Dylan who could so easily rest on his laurels - even attempt that?

Saw him play this two nights in a row in Dublin 3 weeks ago. One of the few songs he repeated both nights. Oddly enough the first night was a bit ho-hum and pedestrian - the following night's performance was transcendent.

Well I saw him fairly recently and it took to the very end of each song to finally figure out what the heck he was "singing". All for taking chnaces but...

I like playing 'Name That Tune' at Bob shows, personally - it's a nice little addition to the evening's entertainment - although I usually figure it out a little quicker than that!

Gazza, it reminds me.....it's a good thing we're not living in 1991 and if "quick uploads/youtube-links" was a common thing.....I have certain New Morning and Most Likely You'll Go Your Way versions in my mind....

LOL

I think theres a bootleg from those shows which IS (justifiably) called 'Name That Tune'. That summer's European tour was the absolute nadir.

It has seemed to me for some time now that people who say things like "Dylan doesn't even know his own songs" or "He's so bad now, you can't even tell what song he's playing" are in fact people who do not know Dylan's music very well. Dylan's songs are alive & well and often changing as he twists & turns them on their head for live performances. The folks who want to hear the songs as they were done on the record don't get that it is they who don't "even know his songs".

People ask why I've seen the Stones so many times. I tell em every show is different. If you know the songs well, you know when Jagger is changing a lyric, a verse, making it jazzy or rockin' it up. You know when Keef has changed the riff just slightly, the tempo is different, etc. These changes keep the songs fresh & alive. I've seen Aerosmith...sounded right off the record. All the right moves on stage, but the songs sounded so stale, so...commercial. The Stones songs always sound fresh to me when I see em live...and that's because they change them often times...just like Dylan.

Christ... Watching this has just made me cry. I've never seen it before, and seeing George Harrison on stage, and then he sings the last verse, bless him. Really really beautiful video, thanks so much for posting!!

Thanks for "Handle with care" and "My Back Pages" - Roy, George... what a great classy musicians there were out there... All of those people, great people,.. yeah, tears in my eyes, too.

It is strange to think when those videos were done, there was the feeling of of long goodbyes as far as the story of Dylan was concerned. Especially in the tribute doncert he looked majestic, but such a bit lost and sad "past his glory" figure. But now THAT is a part of history, and we are reading a new, fascinating chapter.
