So which 3 albums won't be released in Mono? The last 3?

I have a mono copy of the White Album which has some very noticeable differences from the stereo version; complete different versions and/or mixes of the songs, not just combined right/left channels into one.

Not on the artistic side. The Beatles have always sucked imo. They were far less talented than the Stones, the Kinks, the Who the Animals.

Yeah the White album was the last one they mixed in mono...

Let It Be and Abbey Road won't be released in mono. No mono mixes were ever made for those albums. And I think Past Masters will also only be available in stereo.

The White Album. It's called The Beatles. Come ON. You don't call Exile 'The Album With The 3 Balls In His Mouth'.

The substantial differences in the mono and stereo White album mixes are -



Back In The U.S.S.R.
The airplane overdubs occur in different places on the mono and stereo versions.

Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da
The stereo version has hand-clapping during the intro, the mono version does not.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps
The stereo version has some vocal sounds from George at the end, the mono version does not.

Blackbird
The bird sound effects are quite different between the stereo and the mono release.

Piggies
The pig sound effects are quite different between the stereo and the mono release.

Don't Pass Me By
The mono version is much faster than the stereo, and therefore is shorter.
The violin sounds at the end are markedly different.

Why Don't We Do It In The Road
The stereo version has hand-clapping during the intro, the mono version does not.

I Will
The stereo version has more prominent bongos.

Birthday
The stereo version has extra vocals at the end of the second chorus.

Sexy Sadie
The stereo version has two taps on the tambourine during the intro, the mono version only has one.

Helter Skelter
The stereo version has a fade-out/fade-in dummy ending with Ringo's shout of "I've got blisters on my fingers", the mono version does not ! ... this makes the stereo version almost a minute longer.

The stereo version is fine, but on the mono, George's double-tracked vocal is embarrassingly out of synch.

The stereo version has a shorter guitar solo than the mono version.

Just re-read the Beatles.com email and Past Masters WILL be included in the mono box. Plus, the mono box versions of Help and Rubber Soul will include stereo mixes as well. So why don't they just put mono AND stereo on ALL the CDs? Confusing and annoying.

dcba - Understandably I can see why you like teh Stones better but to say The Beatles suck - Come on!!!! Just say they are not your cup of tea. These will outsell The WHo, Stones, Kinks and The Animals entire catalog.

There are more. I remember Harrison's Savoy Truffle has a different mix. There are some extra guitar licks noticeable.

That's because this is the the fourth time people will be buying the same Stones albums - vinyl/CBS CDs/Virgin CDs and now these new ones. No extras, probably crapola packaging.

and it's been over 20 years, vs. 15 at most.

Naturally; the job done by Bob Ludwig in 1994 wasn't bad and the Virgin albums stand up well today. The chances are that the marginal improvement between the 1994 iterations of the albums and the 2009 ones won't be a patch on the improvements between the 1987 iterations of the Beatles catalogue.

I'm not saying there won't be an improvement on sound for the post '71 stuff, i'm just saying that for me, I don't have the ears or the equipment to be *that* bothered so as to shell out for each of the albums again.

Compare with the Beatles...and it's a whole new ballgame, and that's before you go into the mono/stereo thing, or the fancy assed packaging.

Universal are applying a fresh lick of paint to a decenly painted catalogue anyway; The Beatles are, it would seem, getting a full gloss finish on what was really only an undercoat back in '87.

Additionally, though, there is yet another reason. The simple fact that there are a lot of folks on this board who are fans of both bands to equal degrees. I ebb and flow between the two bands. They are the cream of the crop from a time and history when Britain was starting its own significant rock movement. Inspired by the US artists, Lonnie too for the boys:-).
I am move excited by the current Beatles release because I have great sounding Stones CDs. Yeah they lack in some aspects, but mighty fine none the less. The fabs too. I am ok, with a lot of the original releases. Their early stuff especially. But from Sgt Peppers on I have been craving the mono mixes, and some great re-mixed amped up stereo releases as well. It sounds like a cool package with the extra notes, etc...
I am sure the Stones will be having their day!! They will it is inevitable. But they are still working and are resisting the rush to anthologize their stuff. It will come....never fear. And I wait breathlessly!!

That's a great analogy! Still, I'm hoping the Universals will sparkle and shine beyond everybody's seemingly low expectations.

Well, Alan Price won't be concerned.
I think he managed to get the trad. arrangement credited to him (and royalties) for House of the Rising Sun. I nice little earner.
I don't think Eric has ever forgiven him for that.
