Why does '40 licks' now cost £50 at play.com ? I know there is a world recession, but jesus H christ, this is crazy.

It looks like Virgin Records are already running out of their spare Licks copies now that the Stones have not renewed their record deal. I got my copy for $10 a few years after the release. Maybe it was luck?

I've seen it here and there for a "normal" price. There has to be quite a few million more sitting around. I wouldn't pay way above what I paid for it new now - it's not THAT special of an album.

Is it?

You´re right skipstone, unfortunately I´m still waiting that it turns to
cheap licks.

I got mine in the HMV sale last year for £4.99.

They may have confused the CD price with that of the still ludicrously over priced Four Flicks DVD.

How many editions are there now? I got the original one in a plastic case. Then there was a touring edition in hardback booklet form with green lettering. And I think there might have even been a third edition.

Damn guess I'd better pick up that Japanese version that replaces what? the neptunes mix of Sympathy for one of the older classics....

Just so long as Rewind goes back into print if Universal does ever reissue anything I'll be happy. Well, except that it could be updated.

I expect I'm not the only sad git to buy it just to have those four new songs, I probably wouldn't have bothered otherwise.
Whether they were worth having is another thing altogether!

The higher price must be because it's out of print and/or Virgin is cashing in. In the States 40 Licks had a $10 LOWER list price than Hot Rocks when it was released.

Seeing that there is an endless supply of the Virgin one why would the price go up? They EXIST in print and haven't all been sold.

Virgin Records a/k/a EMI raising prices because of the financial crisis?

Anyway, do the Stones have a new record deal or distribution deal of some sort for their Promopub B.V. era material so far?

This might be a sacrilegious question to ask, but I'll do it anyway:
If ABKCO made them an interesting offer, would they even consider signing with them?

No.

The album is out of print worldwide, a new hits collection is in talks for 2009 or 2010.

Dear Bill,
I think your ABKCO suggestion is a wonderful idea, I would write to Sir Mick c/o Universal straight away.
However, I doubt that he would sign again with his old foe for even a billion dollars.
A trillion dollars? Well, yes possibly . Mick has his price.

Actually I think ABKCO's main role these days is to "manage" the product which they own under various copyrights etc. I don't think they actually manage "current artists" - if you see what I mean, but I may be wrong.
Of course, there is always Uncle Phil Spector (?stll under their wing) but then his future doesn't look too promising (except for the legal fraternity) at the moment.

So...another hits comp next year or in 10. But no reissue of Forty (or any others).

OK so I guess that makes sense to have one.

Seeing that it's all gonna be on one label, couldn't they combine their entire career into one giant hits comp?

Ummmmm.....it would be more than the last one - even without the 'new' songs on it.

Hell, I made up my own Forty Licks of the 1971-1997 albums that was very cool.

Great. As long as it includes all those hits that were put out on all those albums released between 2002 and 2009.

Oh, wait.....

You know I went to pick up the Japanese version last week - the one with the bluish tongue and the Neptunes remix of Sympathy - since this is a slightly different version than the one I have in the boxset format, and I was amazed at the price as well!! I'm also amazed at the number of their albums that are going out of print in several different online venues. Seems they are overdue for a new edition - I'd think they're missing out on some sales, no?
