wow, thats the shittiest thing i've seen all night. Damn that list sucks. I'm not giving a list b/c i don't beleive in your premise nor your concept, its so low brow. A top ten list of songs, WTF, how is that even possible. I'll say it once and I'll say it again, please stop comparing ART, its just so foolish to try . . .

P.S. perhaps you should change the thread and say its your favorite top ten. Just objectively speaking you are going to say that a foo fighters song is number 2 in the greatest songs ever written, man thats just dumb, is it me or is this board really getting watered down with foolish dogshit banter . . .

relax northshoreblues! ;-)
i understand your arguments in a way and i also must admit that the list of aerorock is quite eclectic (some great tracks but tons of shite like matthews, offspring, 3rd eye blind, chilli p.)
to compare art is really a bit foolish, but theh again, not everything should be taken that serious. it's his list, some will write back and then it's gone...
no big deal.

do you also go to mariah carrey gigs just to say all the time how much it sucks?
i just wouldnt go there.
forums/messageboards to me are also a playground for not oh so serious discussions.
i personaly dont care soooo much whether the cover of the mono uk version or the stereo zimbabwe version of streetfighting man is worth more....

relax bastard....
i sort of agree with you....that if a thread doesn't interest you
there's no real point in commenting...but....forums like these should
be about free expression. I simply thought NorthShore's post was
humorous....and agree that aerorock's thread should have been "My favorites"
not "greatest ever".

Great to see credit (at last) for the Who's Don't Even Know Myself!

A fantastic song, though proably ignored over the years because of it's B-side status.

Some time ago I was asked what I thought the greatest song ever written was.
When I think of a great song, I always think that lyric, tune and performance are key, and, after some thought, I said that I couldn't settle on one song, but that there were two that came to mind.

The first was written as a poem by a Jewish school teacher from New York called Abel Meeropol after he had seen a photo of a lynching in Indiana in 1936.
I won't post the picture here as it is most unpleasant, but if you want to see what inspired the song, you can see it here:
[upload.wikimedia.org]
He later put the poem to music and it was most famously recorded by Billie Holliday.
The imagery in this lyric is almost too vivid:

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

This is a song that needed to be sung by the right singer and Billie was that singer.

Strange Fruit by Billie Holliday:

The other song that came to mind was completely different.

Written and performed by a bouffant haired, sharp suited, gay black man that began with what can only be described as an onomatopoeic drum roll:

Wop-bop-a-loo-mop alop bom bom

and followed by nursery rhyme lyrics:

I got a girl, named Sue,
She knows just what to do
I got a girl, named Sue,
She knows just what to do
I rock to the east, She rock to the west, but
She's the girl
That I love the best.

But I wish I'd written and performed them!

This was a song that expressed the sheer glee of Rock'n' Roll!

Tutti Frutti by Little Richard:

Don't ask me for another eight, though, I'll be here all night!

Aimed to Deltics, not at all to NICOS.
But NICOS, I will give Tin Soldier e new shot.

I think the main problem is that noone can hold all the good songs in one head.

My top ten are all Dylan.

Re: 10 Greatest Songs Ever Written

1. The Rolling Stones - (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
2. The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever
3. Bob Dylan - Visions Of Johanna
4. The Jimi Hendrix Experience – 1983 A Merman I May Turn To Be…Moon Turn The Tides Slowly Slowly Away
5. The Four Tops (Reach Out) I’ll Be There
6. Led Zeppelin – Stairway To Heaven
7. The Who – Won’t Get Fooled Again
8. Bruce Springsteen – Born To Run
9. Miles Davis – So What
10. The Beach Boys – Good Vibrations

This is a list of my favourites today. Tomorrow it could be different. It’s based on songs that helped change their particularly type of music…i.e. Strawberry Fields Forever pushed music to new limits as did Miles Davis with So What.
