Accomodation should be a bit difficult to find at such short notice during the festival.

They might have to sleep on the sofa(s) at Bill's house in St. Paul de Vence, in which case it would be rude not to take him along too.

It's Charlie's place actually .

All the Stones to appear at Cannes

From a French site today called expatica.com:

20/04/2010Congo musicians, Rolling Stones star at Cannes side-fest
Disabled Congolese street musicians and ageing rockers The Rolling Stones star in the prestigious Directors' Fortnight running alongside the Cannes film festival in May, organisers said on Tuesday.

Heading a line-up marked by high-profile documentaries, the French makers of the film "Benda Bilili", Renaud Barret and Florent de la Tullaye, found the Congolese musicians, some wheelchair-bound, in the slums of Kinshasa.

They filmed in neighbourhoods "where no white people ever go, and that shows from the first moment," said Frederic Boyer, the new artistic director of the Fortnight, singling out the film among its highlights.

The project invites comparisons with "Buena Vista Social Club", Wim Wenders's 1999 film about ageing Cuban musicians which was nominated for an Oscar and propelled the musicians involved to worldwide fame.

Boyer highlighted the three other documentaries in the event, including "Stones in Exile" from Britain, about the recording of The Rolling Stones' classic album "Exile on Main Street", due for re-release next month.

The organisers told AFP they expected all of the Stones -- Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood -- to come to Cannes for the film's premier, but could not confirm whether they would play a concert there.

Let's leave Mick T and Bill out of things. That would be awkward at best, not to mention confusing to the casual fan.

Yes, we wouldn't want to confuse those poor casual fans by having the actual band that played on Exile appear to promote Exile, would we? That would be terrible.

It will be nice to see the Stones together again, but I will have to learn to accept that my favourite band is not not a working unit anymore, by now they are grandfathers who are celebrating their past. There is nothing wrong with that, but I just realized it when I recognized that their last appearance together was the promotion of the Shine A Light documentary film, now they come back with the next documntation. As time goes by.

I'm surprised M. Taylor isn't listed as being there. He did help with the recording of the new material.

Bill, not so much. He hasn't been spotted in public with the band for any occasion, social, business or otherwise in a very long time.

And playing? The new stuff especially...no way. Any group of people can sit together and play the same song at the same time and call it a performance. To make it sound great and play together as a band takes rehearsal time. The Stones are no different than anyone else when it comes to that. So unless we get 'leaks' of the band doing some rehearsing, I hope they don't try it.

All Four Stones expected at Cannes

I read an article today saying that Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, and Ronnie Wood (that's right, Ronnie Wood, not Mick Taylor) were expected to show up at Cannes to promote the Stones in Exile film. It also said it was uncertain if they would perform there. I feel like a handful of shows might be brewing. No plans for a 2010 tour, but a handful of shows promoting a re-release is not a tour now is it? Let's hope they get together and do one song on Jimmy Fallon in May. Any thoughts?

Attending this event isn't an easy job unless you might know people to let you get in .
I love the Stones but I am not the kind to wait under their hotel balcony for hours in order to see them a couple of seconds ...although.....

No they didnt. They would have been on tour anyway as the '98 tour had to be extended into '99. They just released a live album as a tour 'souvenir' as usual.

If Ron shows up in Cannes with Mick , Keith and Charlie it could be that they will perform some songs. Ron isn't in that movie "Stones in Exile" but he is officially a rolling stone;it's an awekward situation.

This is a bit strange scene. The Stones (and ALL of them) seem to be into these kind of premieres and showing ups where one does only need to anything else but... show up and enjoy the media attention. How many such events they had for SHINE A LIGHT? Now, "just another" DVD documentary is the reason to bring all of them - starting from Ron Wood who had NOTHING to do with the project - to Cannes.

Is this this only way The Rolling Stones "performs" these days? Do we recognize a new pattern here (after the Vegas/Cohl era)?

But if my memory serves me right, it was this kind of occasion that took place in in London for SHINE A LIGHT that was the reason for Ronnie fallen off from the wagon last time? When the troubles really started, and the guy found himself from some goddamn escort bar in Soho and end up meeting one particular waitress... the rest, unfortunately, is history...

Ronnnie, stay home.

I could imagine there are contracts with universal that the Stones should be available for promo stunts when ever thats necessary.

after all, they did put a lot of money and effort into the catalog and re-issues.

I don't mind him doing his duties as an official Rolling Stone, but my comment was meant to refer to save his personal life. To stay out of bottle and trouble... (as I tried to hint in my actual post).

Ronnie's private life doesn't interested me unless it has an impact/ incidence on the Rolling Stones .
He can drink as much as he wants and sleep with whoever he wants , I think it's none of my business .

They somehow did tour in behind of a re-release - 40 Licks and 40 years anniversary. It was not a new CD that carried that tour.

That's certainly true. Some of us would argue that they actually did TWO tours behind 40 Licks.

In a wet dream I see the band on the steps of the Festival Palace in Cannes doing their small Exile set:

1. All Down the Line

2. Plundered my Sould ("we have a brand new song for you which we started on - when was it Keith - some 40 years ago?" )

3. Casino Boogie ("the next one we haven't played for a long time. It's certainly nice to perform it here in Cannes, Let's hope we can still get the lyrics right...").

- Jagger saying some words about the Exile project, the documentary and the recording at Nellcote, a few hints about the future... we haven't seen or heard the last of them yet... before introducing the band, including: "a couple of guys you might recognise - a guitarist we just flew in from the States where he is presently on tour, and a bassplayer who we found living in the neighbourhood"

4. Tumbling Dice.

A few days of rehearsals in beforehand would do the trick. Let's pull it off...
