99 red balloons

Here's a bit of useless information, 99 Red balloons, I think it was by a German singer called Nena, I just watched it on TOTP 2 it says she was inspired by watching a Stones concert in 81 and seeing all the balloons go up at the begining, "how interesting" I hear you all saying.

99 Luft Ballons, a big hit in the Dutch charts !
Nena was "hot" these days watch het t-shirt!!!

Nena didn't write it herself.
it was her guitarist Carlo Karges, who also played in my current band "Timebandits" until he died in jan 30th 2002.
He did indeed attend the Stones gig in Berlin, but that was June 8, 1982.
...and didn't the balloons go up after the show?

She's German. From 1982 until 1985-86 she was probably the most popular artist in Germany.

She had a very successful comeback in 2002.

Sorry I thought it was 81, that's when I saw them, if you watch the opening on the Lets spend the night together film they open with Under my thumb and you see all the balloons going up as the curtains open.

Sorry AGAIN, I have just checked it WAS 82 when the Stones toured Europe, I saw them at Wembly and Leeds, they toured America in 81. All these years and I was sure I saw them in 81, never mind!

She did an In Concert for BBC around the time of that hit, if I remember it was very good considering half the set was in German and I had no idea what she was singing about, had it on tape for time but like every other tape I had my dear ex wife threw it away.
As I recall the BBC used to broadcast the show on TV and simultainiously on radio, there were a fe other good artists on in those days, my girlfriend at the time was a big Dire Straits fan same time as their first album, I think the Jam did one as well, can't remember anymore off hand.
I just remembered a group called Grupo Sportivo were also on, don't know why I remember them though.

That's 1/2 right - Carlo wrote the lyrics, Uwe composed the music.

That's right...but hey, there are tons of Time Bandits worldwide, plus the Terry Gilliam movie - it didn't bother us when we started.

our name is Timebandits-berlin to avoid confusion.

I thought she was pretty foxy until I discovered she had managed to conceal the entire Black Forest under her arms.

Ive always liked this song, a great party song. I had no idea it was inspired by the stones 81 - 82 concert balloons. If this is true thats really cool.

Well, like Nena's I find her voice very attractive - or once I did, not sure anymore (and as far as Nena is concerned, we here in Finland came last from the tree in Europe, they say, so we don't have snobbish kind of problems Brits like Gazza seem to have...)

About Kim Wilde - this is what I remember her from:

Cheers
