There has been worse......but
there has also been much much better ones from him.

Good groove...but sounds like very little input from Keith, vocally. Some subtle guitar parts though....

a very joyful noise - i've been listening to it 4 times a day since it came out.
i'd love it if more of Keith's singing were audible, but i also love the way he kinda sneaks in there

it's gonna drop on you :E

love it because Keiths charm is all over this song!

but I think The Harder They Come would have been a better choice for the Run Rudolph Run digital rerelease because it was the b-side of original single. or, even better: why not all three tracks?

Promotone passed "Run, Rudolph, Run" to Keith's Mindless Records as copyright holder as it is a true Keith solo track. "The Harder They Come," despite being released as a Keith solo single, came from a Stones session and features Charlie on drums. It is unlikely Promotone would pass on the track and far easier for Keith to buy the rights to the TRUE LOVE outtake to keep things simple. Its worth noting Mick also bought the copyright to "Too Many Cooks" for inclusion on THE VERY BEST OF MICK JAGGER. It is unlikely they will share the wealth with one another or a third party unless absolutely necessary.

Good information Rocky Dijon, thanks for lying it out logically.

>> Some subtle guitar parts though <<

~*YEAH!*~ the guitars are doing some lovely things indeed -
who's the other guitarist? i believe his name is Dwight Pickney, but that's all i know.

<<Dwight Pickney>>

He's also known as Dwight Pinkney or Brother Dee.

I believe he was a session player at Studio One back in the days.

I like this version very much, and I don't mind at all that Keith isn't really singing on this one, giving way to Toots and let him show that he's an incredible singer.

Great guitars on this version indeed.

Sometimes I'm tempted to set you on a shelf, and just listen to you talk all day about Keith.

Wow, this song is beautiful......I love Toots too (saw him in 1975 as a warm up act for The Who)

Thanks for sharing Too Tough (and to the others who contributed to a similar thread on this song a few weeks ago)

You gotz to listen to the different versions alltogether...

this one has such a good groove...and hey thats Keith's involvement.
Robert Palmer also did a nice version. I have on vinyl only - so I couldnd listen right now...
Izzy ain't that good in comparision.

#1 = Keith & Toots!

This sounds great! Keith just embellishing the groove. This is what he has always done the best. He helps take it to a higher level with the guys he plays with.

Best I've heard in this genre since Caress Ethiopians by the same duo.
Stompy ska-ish laid-back backbeat. I will listen to this a lot!

Keith's snaky little "less is more" fills and embelishments are always great...like the ones on Peter Tosh's Bush Doctor album.
It's always been one of the trademarks of his playing for me.

I downloaded this from iTunes along with Run Rudolph Run, when it was released last month.

I really love it, ok it's nothing amazing but it has a great vibe, good feel, and it warms the heart to hear keith laughing after the acoustic intro!!

Good stuff!!

Listen to it more than Run Rudolph. I remember seeing Toots and the Maytals opening for the Stones at the Ahoy in Rotterdam (and, yes, they played it). Played it with my band once - half the audience thought it was a Clash song.

you guys have heard the original Toots & the Maytals version, right? It's stunning.

the Clash also do a good one.

LOL!!!
An obsession with guitar heros can't really be that healthy, unless it's about good old Keef.

damn, this version is pretty good too, though--thanks TooTough for the post. keith's guitar sounds excellent, but it's the backing vocals (also Toots, I would guess) that really make it for me.

I think this song falls into the great, rare category where it's nearly impossible to do a bad version, unless one were to go totally overboard with production or rearrangement. Though I guess the reggae rhythm is a potential stumbling block.

ok, I may be ODing on this cut, but doesn't Toots' very last vamp on "pressure gonna drop" in the outro sound like he's saying "jumping jack flash"? then keith laughs...

Fun stuff, but, honestly, it's time for Keith to put some stuff out that r-e-a-l-l-y raises the hair of my neck. Its been a long long time since Talk Is Cheap and Main Offender, and although I quite enjoy his little laidback sidetrips, I am thirsty for some more great solo material.
