Stones get road name Satisfaction

Founder members Keith Richards and Mick Jagger grew up in Dartford
The town where Mick Jagger and Keith Richards grew up is to name streets in a new estate after Rolling Stones hits.

The 13 streets in phase three of the Bridge development in Dartford, Kent, are to be given names such as Little Red Walk and Satisfaction Street.

Angie Mews, Babylon Close and Sympathy Street are among the other names approved by councillors on Thursday.

The theme was suggested by the estate's developer and two councillors came up with the road names.

Dartford already boasts the Mick Jagger music and arts centre in tribute to the singer who co-founded the band in 1962, along with Richards and original leader Brian Jones and pianist Ian Stewart.

The centre was converted from buildings originally belonging to Dartford Grammar School.

Fashion designer Wayne Hemingway helped draw up plans for the Bridge.

Celebrate history

Leader of the council, Jeremy Kite, said he thought Ruby Tuesday Drive sounded a "fantastic" place to live.

"It is a very groovy development - a very modern, creative community and I think people will enjoy the street names," he said.

"We are very proud of the Rolling Stones and it is a little bit of our history we can celebrate."

Mr Kite came up with 10 of the new street names, including Stones Avenue, Dandelion Row, Lady Jane Walk, Cloud Close, Rainbow Close and Ruby Tuesday Drive.

Councillor Matthew Davis contributed three, including Black Boulevard and Start Street.

Royal Mail and the emergency services approved the names, but police were concerned the street signs might be stolen by or for collectors.

Mr Kite said the signs were well designed to deter thieves.

"I think there is more chance of people coming to have their photographs taken there," he said.

"It is not just fun - it puts the place on the map and links to our heritage."
