Rolling Stone Magazine & The Rolling Stones (Letter from Mick)
Posted by: sweet neo con ()

Did Muddy Waters write a similar letter?? To the Stones?? To Jann??
Anyone have any other details? Why wasn't this negotiated before 1981?

I (illegally) snapped a picture of this letter while visiting
the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland on Sunday.... winking smiley

That's a pretty amusing letter. Thanks for posting it. It shows that Mick has a sense of humor, just as his appearances on Saturday Night Live and the Rutles mockumentaries do.

Which begs the question did Muddy Waters make his
way over ta Robert Petway's home just outta Yazoo City
and ask could he use Catfish Blues for his own Rollin' Stone?.....

Do you think the entire letter is Mick having fun?
Or just the bit about "ad rates & summer clothes coverage"?

Is it possible that he's not joking about any of it?

It seems odd (esp. that it was written in 1981).....
....that's why I'm interested in more info.

>> Do you think the entire letter is Mick having fun? <<

yep

>> Is it possible that he's not joking about any of it? <<

nope, that really doesn't seem remotely possible.

wasn't it in 1975 that Mick got pissed off over some negative reviews and suggested suing the magazine for using the name?
to which Ben Fong-Torres (wasn't it??) replied something like: "have you checked with Muddy Waters about that?"

The reviews for the Stones' 78 tour were so bad, Jagger kicked the staff writer from the tour.

But they weren't denied facilities....

Thanks sssoul & shawn...

Also interesting to note....the letter was written in June 1981
and the tour began in September 1981....

Maybe this was Mick's way of breaking the ice and mending relations
with Jann (RS Mag)...in hopes of getting favorable coverage after
not so favorable coverage in '78 (1978 according to shawn).

Nah - Sucking In The Seventies was about to come out or did and he wanted good press on a bizarre album! Which, I think, is still their best comp.

Yeah it was the 78 tour Mick got mad at reviews and threatened to sue them, drawing a laughing response of "Go tell it to Muddy Waters"!. I've got the issue around here somewhere. Rockman?

Hey, Rockman isnt that the same article where the writer talks about jamming all night with Keith, Mick and others playing percussion on a phonebook(I think) and doing "No Spare Parts"? I believe Charlie also punched a drunk Jagger in the article too.

I'm thinking of the Rolling Stone Mag article ... But haven't read since ...
Well maybe 78!! ... But do recall that jamming all night piece....

anybody notice my reflection in the picture?
me & my little Sony "point & shoot".....

anyone else been to the R&R Hall of Fame lately?
Sunday was the second time for me...since it opened.

Other Stones things on display (if I can remember):

Mick's US Flag/Union Jack cape & full outfit from '81 Tour.
It was referred to as a "baseball" outfit.

They also had a suit & tie that Mick wore "for "60s Tv appearances".
I think he wore it on Ed Sullivan.

Mick's Voodoo outfit (tophat & all) from '94 tour.

A Ronnie Wood outfit (mesh shirt I think) from '94 as I recall.

One of Brian Jones' instruments. (might have been a dulcimer)

RS Pinball Machine, other outfits and lots of smaller things...make up
a section/wall that is approx. 30 ft long....it included Stones video
clips & music being played on several flatscreens.

I would've snapped more pix but...photo-taking is banned...and I didn't
want risk getting reprimanded too early in my visit.

This may be a dumb thing to say(lord knows I've said a bunch of em on here!) but why do they ban pix taking? Afraid somebody is casing the joint? It just seems natural to want to take pictures in a "museum"!

2 reasons....

1) first reason most museums give....tourists will use a flash...they argue
that over a long period of time, the flash (light) deteriorates the artwork.

2) primary reason for Rock Hall of Fame.....(according to their website etc..)
Musicians, Collectors etc...that loan the items to the Museum/Hall of Fame
are doing so with the understanding that photography be banned.

>> that jamming all night piece <<

that was Chet Flippo learning that drumming for the Stones is not so easy,
at least not on a phone book :E

so who was it who got kicked off the tour in 75? not necessarily from Rolling Stone, but ... [scratching head]
Terry Southern was jettisoned in 72 (not forever, obviously!) ... who was it in 75?

the tongue obviously changed from its original drawing to when it had its first large scale public appearance on the inside of the Sticky Fingers LP

anyone know about how that happened?

yes, perfectly illustrating my point.

So how and why did the change from the "original" one above to the first public advent "Sticky Fingers" version come about?
