OT: Jerry Reed RIP...or not?
Posted by: Sleepy City ()
Date: September 2, 2008 18:45

A couple of people today have informed me that guitarist Jerry Reed as died, but no-one has further info, & it says this on his wikipedia page:

Circa September 1st, 2008, there is a rumor on several Internet discussion boards claiming that Jerry Reed has died. As of September 2nd, 2008 at 5:00 AM Central, no news agencies have reported the story, and there are no references or verifications through a Google search, suggesting it is a hoax.

I think so, though he's probably most famous musically for writing & playing on Elvis' 'Guitar Man'.

I was too young for Bread when they were around. It's kind of a girl band though right, wimpy music for the most part? Were they that popular amongst the rock crowd?

He had the novelty hit Amos Moses in the early '70's.

I always liked "Amos Moses" and "When You're Hot, You're Hot" - top 70's hits!

What constitutes a "novelty hit"??
To me... an example of a novelty song is "The Streak" or "Disco Duck".
A song specific to a cultural fad etc...
the song SWEET NEO CON fits this more than Amos Moses...except most
times humor is invoked.

Not sure if Reed's stuff falls into that category. (IMO)

I first saw Reed when he played guitar on Glenn Campbell's Show in the
late '60s. More recently he played a mean football coach in
Adam Sandler's WATERBOY.

Well yes sweet neo con, I hesitated putting novelty there, but to me it was a novelty...
a goofy song about a fictional character, sung with a goofy accent.

Here's an example of what I'd consider a novelty "hit". I also don't consider Amos Moses a novelty hit, SNC.

If AMOS MOSES is considered a "novelty" song......then
I guess half of the Lynyrd Skynyrd catalogue is made up
of "novelty" songs. winking smiley

I like this "The Mummy" better than the one on that list. Man, that Phyllis Diller can SHAKE IT!

What would her husband Fang think if he saw Phyllis dancing with a mummy ?

Here's a little tribute to Jerry Reed, on of my favourites...
it's "Jerry's Breakdown" played by our very own band, featuring my friend Oli Karaula on acoustic guitar:

Oooh how sad.. he was such an awesome guitar player. In the genre, he's right up there with Chet Atkins..
