Just bought a ticket for this gig. Looks like a very small venue. Cool!

This young Norwegian pianist he's got with him is the absolute bees knees, the definitive canine's testicles (as we in Britain would customarily say) ... he's bloody fantastic.

Was at the recent Hackney Empire Saturday show (as was Adrian L) and thought he was fantastic.

He was on stage for, I guess, around an hour. Expect his hits to be perfored in a medley fashion, coupled with My Ding A Ling and plenty of ovations and howling aimed at his daughter, who despite, imo, getting a little too much of the limelight, I thought was very good.

Sell-out Chuck Berry gig cancellation sparks fears over health of the Rock and Roll legend
By Peter Allen

Fears were growing for the health of Rock and Roll legend Chuck Berry after he dramatically cancelled a sell-out concert and disappeared.
The American guitarist, singer and songwriter, who turns 82 this year, was due to appear before a crowd of thousands at the Carracedo Monastery near Leon, in northern Spain.
But, with just a few hours to go, his management phoned the concert organisers to say he had “set off on a plane somewhere - probably his home city of Chicago, but maybe Paris.”

Fears have been raised for the health of Chuck Berry
“We’re completely bemused as to what is going on,” added a spokesman for Leon regional council, which had booked Berry to bring to a close its annual ‘Mirador de la Reina’ arts festival.
“This cancellation has come out of the blue, and has left us with all kinds of difficulties. It was his decision, and his decision alone, to pull out of the concert,” added the council spokesman.
“We understand that he has also cancelled a concert in Malaga due on Monday night.
“We have been left completely in the dark as to what is going on.
“We will certainly be taking legal action if appropriate.”

Despite such harsh words, there was concern that Berry might be suffering with ill health.
A source close to the entertainer in Paris said: “There were rumours that he’s not been feeling well during his current tour, and suffered pain on stage at a concert.
“We are not sure of Chuck’s exact whereabouts at the moment. There are rumours that he has taken a flight all the way home to Chicago, but there is also a rumour going round that he has flown to Paris for treatment. He’s due to perform here in November, and has many friends in France.”

Berry, who is known as the Father of Rock and Roll, was born in St Louis, Missouri, in 1926.
He is popularly viewed as the inspiration to numerous bands including The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. John Lennon once said: “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it Chuck Berry.”
Berry’s greatest hits include Roll Over Beethoven and Rock & Roll Music.
Johnny B Goode, his most famous single, was recently adopted by American presidential candidate John McCain as a campaign anthem, because of its “Go, Johnny, go” chorus.

Despite this, Berry is a Barack Obama supporter, who wants to see a black man in the White House. Berry said early this month: “America has finally come to this point where you can pick a man of colour and that not be a drawback.

“It's no question, myself being a man of colour. I mean, you have to feel good about it.”
Despite being a millionaire many times over, Berry has never stopped performing.
His current gruelling tour took in numerous European venues, including Britain.

best whishes, Chuck

There's no health problem. He's had an argument with the promoter over...money, the one thing that drives him. He even cancelled a couple of European dates with very little notice because he was offered a better deal for a show in Hawaii. But he's still a heck of a performer at nearly 82, apparantly having no difficulty in duckwalking across the stage!

Good that it's not health related.

now news reports that there was a family row/ dispute in Manchester with his daughter ,about Chuck wanting to speed on the motorway with 200 kilometers/hour.
he's said to be on the way back USA

As the saying goes, you can't change a leopard's spots.....

Glad it's not a health issue, though - that is a mighty gruelling schedule for someone of Chuck's age.

He's still incredibly fit. Usually on 3 or 4 weeks tours he insists on having NO rest days, & he drives himself to & from gigs. At his London show last week he arrived less than 5 minutes before going on stage, & he still had the energy to do a dynamite show. Amazing!!!

Now if only he'd finish the follow up to 1979's 'Rockit' album which he started in 1983...

Can you tell me something about that "Rockit"-album? Worth to buy? Haven´t heard of it until today.

I haven't heard it myself in years, but I bought it at the time & I wasn't over impressed. Most songs sounded like inferior re-writes of Chess classics, & Chuck played all (or most) the instruments to save money. Highlight for me was the single 'Oh What A Thrill' (which I recall Dave Edmunds / Rockpile covering).

I bought this on CD a few years ago out of sheer curiosity. It was recorded in 79...a chuck Berry album...what was in store for me?

Not much.

First off, the band and sound was waaaaaay too clean and polished. There was such a timidness with the sound that it aggravated me. It lacked punch and balls. The songs are not worth repeating twice. Very mediocre stuff that have no kick of any of Berry's other songs/recordings. The style is basically more of the same...the Berry structure with new lyrics on top. That's fine sometimes...but the production of the CD did me in.

Interesting insight to what old Chucko was going in 1979..but after you take a listen....that's all you need.

A Berry-fanatic friend just sent me this:

According to the St. Louis Today website
(http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/the-blender/the-blender/2008/07/chuck-berry-is-a-ok-despite-reports)
Chuck Berry made two appearances at local venues since he cancelled two European shows without reason.
On July 26th 2008 (the day he was supposed to perform in Malaga), he appeared at Ameristar Casino in
St. Charles, MO and on July 28th at Blueberry Hill in St. Louis, MO. He did not perform at either venue,
but appeared in great shape and in a chatty mood joking while agents, promoters and fans are trying to
get the money back that the Legend cashed in. According to legal advisors it can take up to 3 years to get
the money back from Berry.
