Would The Stones Ever Go On VH1 Rock Honors

Have some bands honor them, then they close out the show with a bang!

wouldn't surprise me...i think they have a pretty good relationship
with MTV & Vh-1...but they probably see it similarly to a
"Lifetime Achievement Award" or something....something that
denotes THE END. So maybe it's a good sign if they don't agree to one.
No end in sight??

Maybe the Stones would would agree to do it only if MTV said that it would be okay for Mick to sing the original lyric for "Let's Spend The Night Together."

The Stones dont/wont perform outside the confines of a tour.

They've made lots of appearances on multi-artist awards shows in recent years (some of them with very tenuous Stones links) but always during a tour...theyre obviously using the show to promote their record/tour - MTV VMA's 1989 and 1994, Billboard Awards 1994, VH1 Fashion Awards (!!!!) 1997, American Music Awards 2005, Superbowl 2006 etc.

No end in sight??

..they were given a lifetime achievement award at the MTV VMA's in 1994 and performed two songs at that show.

Dont recall any talk at the time that this was some indication of a finale - and it doesnt appear to have been the case for other artists either.

Touche'. That would be great if they agreed to it.

It reminded me of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement when...I think during
some TV interviews....Stones made some comment about these types of
honors usually denoting an end of career or something...

To be honest (other than THE WHO) I'm not up to speed on who has
been "honored" by vh-1 in this way. My bad.

Sounds like it's other artists paying tribute...and then
Stones performing. great!

re: the '94 Lifetime for VMA is specifically for video making not a
general honor for the band or their entire career...simply recognition for
music videos..right. Not arguing...just wondering.

and re: vh-1 honors i simply speculated that they might see it that way..
..and therefore might not be willing to want that "honor" yet..or at all.

(gazza..sometimes it's hard to tell if you are also speculating...or if
you're jumping on me. winking smiley )

I hope not. I don't even know where VH1 is anymore. Does anyone watch it?

No, no..I only jump on someone who tries to jump on me first....LOL. You're not my type!

I think youre right about the MTV thing - while its a lifetime achievement award, i presume thats to honour their video history..even though I dont recall any mention made of them in the speeches. (If I remember right, the VMA's have something called a 'Vanguard' award to honour career achievements for music videos...I recall Tom Petty getting one a few years ago. I stand to be corrected though,as like most music fans who have passed the age of puberty, Ive totally lost interest in music channels for about the last decade, when they er.. stopped featuring music....

I think they may have mentioned that retirement thing in the Grammy acceptance speech, and Mick certainly mentioned it when they were inducted into the RnRHoF in 1989 - "we're not ready to hang up the number just yet" or something similar.

i think the bottom line is that they;ll use an award ceremony for their own ends if it occurs at a time when they have something to promote.

Its interesting that theyve never received a Brit award - not for a record or even a lifetime achievement, yet artists such as the Spice Girls, Oasis, Eurthymics etc have been honoured for their career achievements, despite not having been around for very long - and veteran artists like Macca, Van Morrison and the Who have also been honoured.

The thing is - you only get this award with the proviso that you perform at the show (the recipient usally closes the evening with a 15 minute set). Its a big honour and a perfect showcase to promote something. Jagger did say a year or two ago that theyd been offered it one time and turned it down (I think he alluded to doing so for the reason youve indicated). However, that doesnt equate with the fact theyve accepted similar honours elsewhere and performed at those ceremonies. The logical excuse is more believable - the ceremony takes place in late February/early March. The Stones dont perform anywhere unless theyre touring and if theyre doing so, at THAT time of year they're usually in somewhere like Japan or South America. Never in Europe.

**********

absolutely.

surprised THE WHO didn't use it that way. (just kidding) Is vh-1 sponsoring
the Who tour?

Townshend is really in overdrive...framing The Who's legacy.
Even more philosophical than usual and blatantly telling us all
where THE WHO fits in the scheme of things. Even suggesting more
current bands should start covering WHO tunes.

I love THE WHO but aren't legacies usually determined by
the general public, critics, authors, music historians etc...?
The band did their part already...created the music & the spectacle.

We know pete's a musical genius.....i guess now he's practicing his
hand at psychology & marketing...but I guess that was all part of it all along.

Well it would seem to fit in with a 2009 tour then.
