When Songs are Used in Movies

I just finished watching Darjeeling Limited (weird, but cool) and, of course, I was taken by surprise when the song Play with Fire started playing. It was very well placed -- just fit perfectly, but it got me to thinking....Do the Stones see the movie before they agree to have it put in or is it just a matter of payment?

since Play With Fire is part of the ABKCO catalogue, it's ABKCO who licenses it, not the Stones.
as far as i understand it, the Stones don't have to be consulted at all.
you can read a bit about synchronization rights (in general, that is, not the ABKCO situation in particular) here:
[entertainment.howstuffworks.com]

(ABKCO's licensing fees are probably not in the "typical range" listed there -
lots of filmmakers have talked about wanting to use ABKCO tunes but the fees were way beyond their budgets)

ABKCO had 2 of my videos removed from Youtube!
And to think I hated them and thought screw ABKCO even before that...

IMO, most movies use background music to mask how shitty the movie is. If the action on the screen is sufficiently compelling, then you don't need "Play With Fire" or a string section to artificially pump up the audience.

For example, 'No Country For Old Men'. A gripping movie, with almost no music.

Just my two cents.

I don't think any song ever fit into any movie as well as The End in Apocolypse Now. The horror!

Thanks. Especially to with sssoul. You would think that sooner, or later, just searching my question, before asking, would come naturally to me! Maybe I'm too old. I mean, I'll do it when my kids ask me things I don't know. You just can't say, "I dunno," to kids anymore -- you have to search for the answers. Should start doing it more for myself and keep from looking incredibly stupid all of the time.
