Japanese CDs - why so much better

Last month had a wonderful Europa-trip, in Erlangen, DE for "die Berg", down to Munich fur vielen weissen, thru Salzburg, and three days in Praha (with accessory stops, of course, in Budejovice and Plzen. Jah, ich liebe Bayerisch!!

In Prague I picked-up a Japanese remaster of Between the Buttons (London version, unfortunately). My co-travellers and I much enjoyed it thru the CD player of our Opel, and must say it sounds wonderful on the home stereo.

My question is, what accounts for the superior sound of Japanese CDs? I know that Japanese vinyl was always superior (I thought) because of higher-grade vinyl. But what accounts for the excellent CD sound? Is it just the remaster job?

Good question. I think the mastering is a lot better on Japanese CDs. Not just Stones ones either. Bruce Springsteen's early back catalogue sounds a lot better clearer, with more instrument separation - on the Japanese versions.

Because the typical Japanese diet is much lower in fat an cholesterol.
Also, the crime rate is lower than most European countries and the USA.

I guess this is a question of mixing process ? I would be interested to know exactly why it's better. You need the master tapes to remix or improve a recording. Why a band would allowed a crap sound for the rest of the world and a cristal one for Japan.. ?

I have a few japanese ones especially for the bonus tracks featuring on.

Rocky: Those SHM CDs. Are they the same as the Japanese paper sleeve editions of the 2002 60s remasters?

Well Japan = sound technology! If anyone knows how to make a CD sound optimal, it's them. But I don't know why they release different masters/mixes of a CD in different continents. Why not just release the best everywhere?
