Possible Warhorses from ABB
Posted by: ChelseaDrugstore ()

This other thread made me think about this: in the past the Stones have always taken the new album on the road and turned the new songs into real battle axes. Played them front and backwards; with solo, without. Horns. no Horns etc. this makes warhorses. I will never understand why they did not do it with ABB. The example of Streets of Love alone underscores this point.
What songs, and why do you think would have changed for the better and become good live cuts?
I hear Driving too fats maybe and definetly She Saw me coming.

Back Of My Hand could be a warhorse in my book. Same with Rough Justice. Imagine horns on that one. Could be cool to hear.
But that's just MY warhorses. In reality there's only around 9 warhorses.

Doesn't it take rather longer to make a "Warhorse" than the band reasonably have left to train it ?

I think the notion of Rough justice with horns is a good idea. And that is what I was talking about. Let's forget about the term'warhorse'. Like what could have been done to ABb cuts to turn them into hot concert rockers.

so what are your definitions of "warhorse", Kent & Spud & Chelsea?
does it have to be a "rocker"? does it have to be over X years old?
does it have to have been a huge hit when it was released?
does it have to have been played on over X percent of the last 2/3/4/5/6 tours?
and so on. does it have to have horns on it? work well as an opener/closer/encore?
StonedTod has to be sick of it? or ... ?

Don't know what to say.

Some how, all off the tracks from ABB turned out very well live. And the only two that were reworked Streets and Hand, actually were great.

But over all, they were penalized by the position in the set list (why not an encore?) and by context: they were too alone.

IMO Rough Justice is a definite warhorse.
They do need to turn Charlie up live though, listen to the CD then live versions...

things changed with 40 Licks. From that release on, they gave up on promoting new material and conceded that they were a nostalgia act.

What about It Won't Take Long? Very similar to classics like BS, JJF etc. One of the only three tracks after SMU that could/ should have gotten warhorse status (along with You Got Me Rocking and I Go Wild). Unfortunately it was thrown out after they played it twice too slow in California. Too bad, it's really a fantastic rocker.

rj is great because it is pretty raw and does NOT have the horn treatment etc...

but i really walk around with beggars banquet in my head all day long these days for some reason...

"some reason" is quite simple really. BB is an absolutely superb album! (i feel redundant even saying that on a stones board . . .)

None, I'll be very surprised if they play any song in future tours.

Is Tumbling Dice a warhorse ? Is YCAGWYW a warhorse ? They're both very commonly commonly played songs, but I personally wouldn't put them in quite the "definitive" warhorse category in which I'd lump songs like JJF, BS, SMU, SFTD, Satisfaction etc. Don't know why really, but I just don't consider them warhorses in quite the same way as the others.

I know what you mean - and agree, - though only in terms of TD. YCAGWYW, I think, is right up there with Satisfaction et al. On the other hand, I'm always shocked at how few people seem to know TD when it's played in concert.

Or perhaps there's another reason TD is not a true warhorse: I'm not sick of it!

Rough justice - but saint of me, out of control, flip the switch are way better!
She saw me coming - no warhorse without live performance
Dangerous beauty - same
The rest has got no chance to ever become warhorses...

I consider TD and YCAGWYW to be warhorses. then you have sFM and gimme shelter. not sure what category to put those in.

Re: Possible Warhorses from ABB

the band introductions are a warhorse - after all, they're done at every show . . .

Don't get me wrong: I love A Bigger Bang. But Beggars through Goats, along with Some Girls and Tattoo You, had an seismic impact on my life.

The strongest tracks of ABB are warponies at best. I need more time in the saddle with them.

I think we are being very loose in the interpratation of the term"warhorses". As I understood it. It is not a term of endearment. It means a song that we are usually sick of hearing live. So unless they keep touring 40 yrs. from now? I don't think you can consider anything off ABB a warhorse.
