Is Satisfaction Overrated?
Posted by: FrankM ()
Date: March 21, 2008 02:40

While I don't think The Rolling Stones are overrated in any way I can't help but think that maybe Satisfaction is a little overrated? It is certainly a great rock song and I would put it in the top ten but it's consistently ranked either one or two on most best songs lists. How do you think it compares to other rock classics like Lola, Layla, Stairway To Heaven, Hey Jude, Baba O'Riley and other Stones classics like GS, JJF etc.?

In a word, no. Can you imagine being 16 or 17 in 1965 and hearing that distorted riff coming through your transistor radio speakers for the first time?? Must have been like the sky opened and all questions about life were answered. Satisfaction overrated? Never.

I envy people who were around in the summer of '65 to hear that on the radio. It had to have been burned in the back of your brain forever.

I can't think of a single song that has come out since I was born that I'll look back and say, "wow, that was something to hear."

I'm still holding out for time travel though.

Well, I think that Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit can be compared with Satisfaction (in a way). In my opinion Satisfaction is way better, but SLTS was very innovative at its time, a real hurricane. Like Satisfaction - simple strong riff and the lyrics - a generation statement. Both songs have this in common tand they are both very important milestones in music history

I think the importance is not overrated.
And for people who were alive in 1965 it is not overrated.

For people my age (27) it might be. Although I think it's a massive song, but I don't even put it in my top 10 , maybe top 20 Stones songs.
Great riff, great song. But I'm a bit bored with it. While I heard JJF maybe twice as much... I still think 'WOW' when I hear that tune.

Very important track for music history and for the stones. But there are better stones songs.

Live versions, yes, very overrated.

I was 15 @ the time & the fuzz riff was HUGE. Before air guitars we played 'ruler guitars' in school & that was definately one of the riffs we played constantly.

Well Happy24, that is exactly what I was going to say. Smells Like Teen Spirit swept thru the nation with such a force that nuthing before or sense had seen since I'd say Satisfaction.

I hope I don't get flamed for this but yes it is a bit. It is a great song but I cringe when people say this is the bands signature song because they have so many better ones. If I had to say what the stones signature song is it would be JJF which in my opinion is the greatest rock song ever written.

As a great rock song - no

As a great Stones song - yes.

Very significant song in terms of rock n roll history, but whilst it'll be the song for which the Stones will be remembered more than any other, theyve recorded many that are superior - not just in the years since, but also around the same era.

The best way to judge a record's merits are to compare it to the other records that were released at around the same time. So, let's see .... what was on the singles charts in the summer of '65?

I'm Henry VIII, I AM
What's New Pussycat?
What The World Needs Now Is Love Sweet Love
I Got You Babe
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

Do you see now why everyone was so blown away by it at the time?

Did you know that "I'm Henry VIII, I Am" was the record that knocked Satisfaction out of the #1 spot on the charts? Which just goes to show, record buyers were no more intelligent in 1965 than they are today.

without doubt.

too many fans vicariously relive their youth through this band (also over rated) and consequently mistake familiarity for greatness.
