send it to me (although its kind of a disco-reggae)

I'm gonna go with "Everything Is Turning To Gold". Though that might be more funk than reggae... I dunno.

Very hard to choose just one. But Crackin' Up and the first version of Too Rude came first in my mind.

Too Rude.

I love all.Hard to choose.I love it very much when The Stones play reggae! I hope some more!
My faves are: Luxury, Don't Look Back, The Harder They Come, Feel On Baby, all Keith's, and Cherry Oh Baby (it's very underrated!)

Most reaggey is without any doubt You Dont Have To Mean It?
Would be nice to hear how they'd achieve with Cherry these days.
But we wont be talkin' covers here, would we?

But me, I think I go with Too Rude.

Yet the ultimate experience would be Toots on stage
while doin' Careless Ethiopians.

If I can choose between live versions too, I'd say Cherry Oh Baby from MSG June 27 1975

Otherwise my vote goes to You Don't Have To Mean It, with I Got a Letter as a close second

You Don't Have To Mean It. After the first five tracks of BtoB - all sad or dark or angry in their different ways - this is like a patch of warm sunshine.

I was listening to UC the other day and had to repeat Feel On Baby a few times.
I will go with that as best original and Too Rude as best cover

You Don't Have To Mean It is not reggae. Damn. C'mon.

Too Rude is as close as yer gonna get. After that it's that terrible cover of Cherry Oh Baby. Keith's Words Of Wonder is close, if not the closest of all.

Send It To Me isn't reggae either. Just because the guitars do something reggae-esque doesn't mean it's reggae.

That's as stoopid as saying that Clapton's I Shot The Sheriff is reggae. It ain't.

Mick might sing Luxury in that Jamaican accent, but it's not a reggae song. It's pure rock.

I felt like a hillbilly for a minute there...just a minute, now

Luxury is as reggae as Fingerprint File is!

How about "Truly" by the New Barbarians on Mac's CD?

"No Anchovies, Please"

Can't beat 'Walk and don't look back' with Peter Tosh. Straight Stones track? I'll go with 'You don't have to mean it'.

Oh, I love this thread!

I love the Stones doing Reggae, whether it's a cover or from their own feather.

I really like Cherry Oh Baby. It's a good cover version, I think.

Too Rude is so cool, it's really reggae-y and sounds quite similar to Keith's Words Of Wonder (which is my favourite, anyway!!).

And although Luxury isn't 'pure' reggae, it still has this Reggae-flair, know what I mean? Mick does a very good job with his singing on this one.
You Don't Have To Mean It .... What a song!! I mean, it's my fvaourite from the BtB album, it's just great! I could listen to that song over and over again. True enough, it's not real Reggae, too, but it also has this touch, and the way Keith sings it simply melts my heart away. Love his voice there.
Oh, and not to forget, some passages of Fingerprint File.

So, Stones Reggae, my favourites would either be You Don't Have To Mean It/Luxury (depending on my mood) and Keith-only would be Words Of Wonder.
In fact, I like Words Of Wonder more than I like any other of the Stones' great reggae.
WOW is pure reggae.

this is interesting anyway..how those songs are "raggae" or not..

Everything is turning to gold..I'v never thought of it like a raggae song..sounds more funky rock-blues yeah

You don't have to mean it, to me IS raggae, up-tempo, but still raggae.

send it to me, is raggae at the disco, very eighties, with those delays and reverbs, it almost has a dub flavour.

You Don't Have To Mean It is just islands influenced. It's not reggae. That tune is as reggae as The Rolling Stones are a country band.

I know. I'm reapeating myself. I can't remember why. I think it's either I've had too much coffee or I forget to look further up the post...I mean, whatever, read the previous few posts...

Hey Skippy,

If ya think Keef's reggae influences (or Mick's, for that matter)
mainly or only derive from "Islands" then yo're farther out than I thought.

Thing is (This has been scrutinized over & over): Charlie is a helluva
thunder drummer. Maybe the best imho. But he cant do back beat.
On the clip above he's pretty damn close; nevertheless....

A little closer on studio rendition, still..
[www.amazon.com] (WMP)

B u t , and this hasnt been said before (at least not by me):
if ya check closely on the murder back beat drummers, not even THEY always stick to the
ortodox rootsy roots drummin'.. It's like when ya lookin'for something
original or primordial ethnos. Its no use.
