Long version of Midnight Rambler on Rolled Gold?
Posted by: martinw ()

There is a letter in this month's Record Collector magazine stating that the version of Midnight Rambler on the recently released Rolled Gold compilation is longer than the original release (9.12 as opposed to 6.54!!). Can someone who has got this check it out and confirm? Or is it the Ya-Ya's version?

No - the writer is complaining about Kris Needs' "dismissive" review of RG. Apparently the promo preview copy is a "Stars on 45" type CD with just snippets of the tracks, which Kris Needs was moaning about.
But the letter does say "..the Midnight Rambler version, at 9.12, is a bonus compared with the Let It Bleed 6.54 version". Nothing about a different release...what about the limited first edition with the different style case?? Curious...

I guess nobody bought Rolled Gold since f u c k i n g ABKCO insists on re-releasing every goddamned compilation over and over and over and over the same songs over and over and over and over...when almost anyone can make their own compilation of exactly what THEY want...

Last night, I made me a cool comp called Flip The Switch. The fast meaty tunes from 1976 to 2005, plus two different mixes of a couple of tunes.

There's a new website - it's either up or it will be - that is strictly outtakes, alternate takes, B-sides...of bands...a digital box set in progress basically...that will allow fans to buy the tunes and make their own compilation, add tracks to other albums, etc...

I don't know the name of the site yet. If someone doesn't beat me to it, I'll post it up here as soon as I find out. It's new. So imagine if The Rolling Stones were to put Criss Cross, Misty Roads, Fiji Gin, What You Gonna Do With My Love....

Oh. Sorry. My point was just that no one has seemingly bought Rolled Gold because we all already own those tired songs and what? What is the point? I just don't get it. So maybe we'll never truly know if Midnight Rambler is any longer.

You bought something that The Rolling Stones never approved for release so you could add it to your collection?

so its a kind of 'legal bootleg' - legal because ABKCO is legally entitled to release such thing, and 'bootleg' because band never approved it?

hmm, I dont care a shit, quite frankly.

how many illegal boots you have added to your collection, skipstone?

Oh, My God. I've got the 9:12 alternate version of Midnight Rambler on my limited jakebox edion of the album. And guess what: It features a beautiful and haunting slide guitar solo by Brian Jones!!

Sorry, just kidding!drinking smiley The standard 6:54 studio version is on my copy.

Maybe the original Rolled Gold compilation from the seventies had the live version form Ya-Yas on it?

Nope; just the 6:54 Let It Bleed version.

so it sounds like the letter-writer talking about a 9:12 version
had Rolled Gold mixed up with Hot Rocks.

Illegal boots? Ummm. About 15 or so.

As far as the not-Stones approved ABKCO releases, I have Metamorphosis. I still haven't bought any of the ABKCO remasters yet with exception to Metamorphosis. I don't really need to.

Indeed. The 2002 remaster of Ya'Ya's can't be described in any words!

yeah, and the others are great too. really significant upgrades also of some of the earlier stuff. if skipstone claims he does not need them then sound quality is obvioulsy not a big concern for him.
