Think I'm Going Mad

Was this the b-side to She Was Hot?

It actually ranks as one of my favorite Stones songs. I love the version on Tattoo You sessions.

I don't know why they hold back. There has to be some amazing music that is hidden away.

If only I could be their business manager.

By the way, I like Mick Avory over Mick Taylor.

Yes, it was the B Side of She Was Hot. Emotional Rescue outtake, I believe. Beautiful, beautiful song - Jagger sounding uncommonly (and genuinely) vulnerable. Would have made a great sign off for Undercover.

Briefly released on the promo/ultra limited edition two CD of Flashpoint - which included B sides and 12" mixes (a proto rarities).

The best version of the song is the extended one on the Static in the Attic boot - you get more piano, slide guitar and sax. Check the Hot Stuff section for this.

That disk was titled COLLECTIBLES but it does *not* include "Think I'm Going Mad", which has never had an official digital release afaik. It should have been included on RARITIES.

A 14 minute studio jam version from Paris 1982
with Keith Richards on lead vocal can be found on...

and listen to the fantastic KEITH version (really a song worked by Keith) lasting 15 minutes (!!) on UNDERCOVER OUTTAKES boots (Rogue). A gem, very relaxed style with great guitars

My bad. What comes from having too many B Side bootlegs, y'know? - the line between the official and the (better) unofficial comps blurs.

It's seems that is the ONLY official studio song that the Stones have NEVER released on CD (I don't count remixes and alternate versions), isn't it?

I absolutely luv the song!!

The curious thing is that there are really a lot of GREAT out-takes from that period around 1980, enough to do a very good album!
Think about:

Everything is turning to gold
Think I'm goin mad
If I was a dancer
We had it all
Lets go steady

I did not know about Keith version of TIGM, could someone be so kind to post it?

I read that the reason it wasnt on Rarities was because they couldn't locate the master of it.

If so, it speaks volumes for the shoddy way in which that project was thrown together.

I believe you are correct unless we also include the Italian version of "As Tears Go By". I don't think this official release (was it on the vynal copy of "Slow Rollers"?) has ever been released on any legitimate CD either, has it?

A further thought....what about "Exile On Main Street Blues" (from the official NME promo disk)? Is this a third candidate for this category?

makes you wonder if there's more material on bootleg than there is in the vaults

Could you imagine the Stones doing that number live on stage?
I guess it would be the same live-burner as Streets Of Love is.

Yes, the Italian version of ATGB is on the vinyl Slow Rollers, but not released on any LEGIT Stones CD

should we lend our boots to them ?? smiling smiley

It has always been very surprising me, the fact to rediscover some lost tapes.
Led Zepp nov 10,69 has been found recently in the Europe 1 radio basement.
I remember a great concert of Cole Porter/Billie Holiday (in 1946 or around) if I am correct, discovered a few years ago in the basement of a major recording company. A treasure.
And you could add many other examples of forgotten/lost tapes.
One of the Musicorama made by the Stones at the Olympia was lost because the guy of Europe 1 radio was coming back from the show on a motorcycle and the tape falled down in the street !

I found a bootleg about ten years ago that had Think I'm Going Mad, C--ksucker Blues, Jump on Top of Me and a few other hard to find gems. I kick myself for not buying it. I was in a Seattle phase and bought Temple of the Dog instead. Mind you that the Seattle scene had been ten years past its prime at this time. That's genius! The bootleg was gone when I went back a week or so later to purchase. Anyone have this?

I was very disappointed with the Rarities cd. I had a good majority of these songs as B-sides, so there wasn't too much that was surprising or a real "find".

I think it just reiterates their disinterest in the past.

They should've checked Ian Stewart's barn ;-)

Which also speaks to the reason why we'll never get an offical release of their outtakes..ala The Beatles Anthology...which in The Rolling Stones' case is much more of a shame...it could be a fantastic release....guess we'll see

the shoot 'em dead, brainbell jangler!

The live version of "Hand Of Fate" from the b-side of the "Biggest Mistake" 7" has not been released on CD.

To think this song was recorded in 1979 and did not make Emotional Rescue! Maybe they are too close to their songs and can't hear the magic in them??? I'd say the same for Misty Roads, I Need You, Not The Way To Go, What Gives You the Right...
It's amazing that they didn't think they were release worthy. They are some of my favorite songs.

This song was mixed by Bob Clearmountain which has led me to suspect that it was seriously considered for inclusion on TATTOO YOU. It would have fit well on side 2.

This song is one of the great Rolling Stones songs....it's a shame they didn't include it on Tattoo You (e.g. instead of boring "heaven")

Unless youve heard some versions that are different to the ones that are in circulation, I'm bewildered as to how you think theyre release worthy. Whilst theyre interesting, theyre quite obviously unfinished.

No..its definitely the other way 'round (see that clip in 'Being Mick'). They just happen to be a bit careless at times in archiving it, I guess.

I believe the truth is that the worthwhile "unreleased" tracks are already in circulation.

What's left are snippets and half-finished ideas.

It astounds me that hard-core fans still insist that some studio gems still remain. There are literally thousands of Don Quixotes out there, isn't that true?

Most of what HAS circulated is precisely that.

On the balance of probability, in a 45 year career with literally thousands of takes recorded of hundreds of songs, the amount thats in circulation is a tiny percentage and the chances of those songs being the best available of each song is somewhat unlikely. Dylan and Springsteen's archive series unearthed lots of songs that had never even been bootlegged previously. Many of them were excellent. Whilst I doubt theres a Blind Willie McTell or This Hard Land lurking in the Stones vaults, theres bound to be a sizeable amount of finished takes we havent heard of that are releasable - even if many of them are alternate versions of released songs.

"In circulation" via bootleg does not equate to quality official releases. Many Stones fans who have little or no interest in bootlegs have never heard "Criss Cross" or "For Your Precious Love" (to use but two release-worthy examples). I've no doubt there's more stuff in the vaults that have *never* circulated via bootleg for that matter.
