This version was not a demo for U2. It was a Bono solo recording that he recorded with Keith and Ronnie in New York while they were there for the Dirty Work sessions and it was released on the Little Steven organized Sun City album in 1985. Two years later U2 decided to record their version of the song to be a B side for their Where The Streets Have No Name single.
