Digital Audio Enhancement

First of all, I must explain that I no longer listen to music on my home stereo setup (which is a home theater for watching TV, DVD & VHS). I listen to CDs & other digital audio on my PC.

That being said, I think my ears are now conditioned to this format. I haven't listened to a record on a turntable in years, even though that's what I grew up with (I'm now 50, BTW).

So, now I've fully embraced digital technology, and I just installed the latest DFX Enhancement software (version 8.36) for Windows Media Player 9.

This may be anathema to the vinyl-oriented audiophiles, but I actually prefer this newfangled stuff. The bootlegs especially sound good with the digital enhancement. "Brussels Affair" & "Handsome Girls" sound fantastic in this format.

Are most forumers in the same boat, sonically speaking? I am well aware that a few vinyl adherents are members, but the majority are firmly in the digital camp.

Am I correct in this assumption?

It's different with me, I been into CDs since 1990 - but these days I'm listening to vinyls for the most. Hell, even Brussels 1973 sounds better on vinyl
70% of the stuff I'm listening to doesn't exist on vinyl, though - and of course CDs do the job in those cases.
Other computer-formats; no thanks!

I agree with you, Erik, and if I were wealthier, yeah, I'd have an expensive stereo system with a turntable. Alas, I have neither the money nor the space for that kind of extravagance.

So, what do I do? I take my digital media and try to make it sound as good as the analog LPs. The irony does not escape me.

I prefer cds these days mainly for convenience of being able to play them in the car as well as at home.
I do have a turntable set up at home but rarely have time to settle down to listen these days, same thing with the cds though of course they are more convinient so I can sometimes put on a cd while I'm doing something else.
As for listening the car is now more than ever where I get a chance to catch up with any new items that have come my way.
Traffic jams are far more enjoyable if you have a decent cd to put on and there is always a good selection in my car.

The "enhancement" made possible by modern digital technology will often produce a "better" and more listenable end result with much material.
That said, it's often because the real quality of the recording has alreday been lost earlier in the chain. What you're doing, in most caeses, is making the best of a bad job.

I hear CDs. I prefer the sound on LPs, but I don't own a decent LP player. I have about 320 CDs and about 140 of them are official Stones CDs (Not counting the 120 bootleg CDs). I buy Stones on CD. Always have, always will.

DFX Audio Enhancer.....pain in the rear, they want money, and it's hard to get rid of the (free) download once you have done it. So, it really isn't for free

Sure, there's a registered (for pay) version that has more features, but I like the free version. I use this in conjunction with the EQ settings available in WMP 11, and it sounds fine to me. If I don't wanna use DFX, I can always turn it off.
