Those Milan 70 videos are copyrighted by ABKO?
Date: December 4, 2007 22:15

ABKO complained to youtube about the video I uploaded of the Stones performing "Stray Cat Blues" in Milan, 1970... and the video got deleted. That stuff was filmed with an 8-mm by a fan. How can they claim ownership of that?

ABKCO owns the publishers' rights to Stray Cat Blues, which includes its use in films and suchlike.
if the video were silent they couldn't protest, i guess, but the fan who filmed it
doesn't have the rights to the audio. (might be on thin ice with the video too,
unless he/she had permission, but that would be the Stones' thin ice, not ABKCO's.)
a couple more threads about ABKCO clamping down on youtube stuff all of a sudden:

I would understand that if the audio featured the studio version of "Stray Cat Blues" or the live version from "Ya Ya's" but the audio is taken from that Milan show so it's not official stuff. I don't get it.

I hate Allen Klein.

ABKCO owns the rights to it anyway. when it's performed, they get a cut.
when it's released, they get a cut. when it's used in films, they get a cut.
there may be no cut to get, like in this case, but they don't have to allow it.

... how do you think the Stones feel?

[she smiled sweetly:] i can tell you haven't read that "how music royalties work" thing i found for you yesterday -
but wikipedia claims ABKCO's even gone after music teachers showing pupils how to play ABKCO-owned songs.

well ... they do let the Stones release something once in a while.

even though we all knew the youtube stuff is mainly bootlegs, this sudden scourge
is a bit like some mythical monster suddenly coming to life and going on a rampage

Nothing mythical about ABKCO. The monster is real!

yes, i know. i was indulging in a simile.
the "why now, all of a sudden" effect is what does it -
we knew the monster's real; it just seemed for a while that it didn't care that much

Depends. Was it a 'public performance' where you could be gaining profit from it?

If not, you are in the clear.

Why doesn't ABKCO delete the BS 7/26/72 footage?

Oh, I'm listening to a Funkadelic boot right now... maybe I should turn down the volume to be safe... At least it's not ABKCO.
