OT - I saw Jethro Tull last night

I was pretty disappointed in the show. Ian's voice was way off and too soft. It was obvious that he was having trouble singing so the flute was out a lot. Martin Barre was great as well as the rest of the band.

Best song of the night FAT MAN

Would love to see Martin do a solo club tour, but he doesn't seem to have any ambitions outside of being Ian's lifelong side kick.

Yeah. I LOVE Tull especially up to and including Brick. I pretty much lost track after that. His set-list these days, I'm sure, includes way too many songs that I either don't know or don't care to hear. He also looks a little plump and quite bald these days, not the way I want to remember him. His recent performances don't seem to have the high energy anymore. They seem a little old, a little slow and a little tired. Maybe it's just me.

Where was the show?

How long did they play?

How was their setlist?

How was the overall sound?

Were they exciting or just playing the songs?

Is this part of the accoustic tour?

Yo, Duane, it's called ...."aging", or "Getting old".... look into it my friend, it seems to nab most people. Ask Santa for a big fat watch this Christmas, that will help......oh, and Jethro Tull is not a "he" (that lead guy is IAN ANDERSON)it's a "They"......... awww, just like I was back in High School explaining things...nice...

In New Jersey at the NJ Performing Arts Center.

They played about 2 hours ( started at 8, 20 intermission, ended at 10:30 ) including the encore.

A good setlist but a lot of the songs were dramatically altered and extended by a four piece string section.

The overall song was just okay and Ian's voice was just too soft.

They seemed to be into it.

On a side note: I just posted on the LED ZEP topic about younger fans seeing an older band for the fist time. There were a group of "young adults" sitting next to me who actually booed at the end of the show because it wasn't the harder Tull sound the 70s. They just don't get it and I think ZEP will suffer the same.

Anderson's voice has been weak for years. He's kind of an a-hole, too. One time someone in the crowd was disturbing him, so he stopped the song after the intro and told the crowd "that's one less that you're going to get tonight." Failed to play Aqualung, also...

I read once that he started bitching about the crowd in Atlanta and someone through a hunk of Brie cheese at him. Kind of funny.

I had the opportunity to spend about a couple hrs with Ian last year (Ian Anderson and symphony show) A promoter friend of mine asked me if I would drive Ian to and from a show. He does not travel in the buses with the rest of the band or crews.

The man was a true gentleman. We talked a great deal after the show with topic ranging from their catalog getting ready for digital release, iPod FM Transmitters for cars, music becoming public domain in the UK after 50 yrs and the fight against it, computers, his salmon farm, hunting, American politics and a bit about Jethro. I told him that "Bungle in the Jungle" was the first 45 I ever bought (very true) I was a child back then. He told me the orgins of the song and why they usually never perform it.

Asked me my honest opinions of that evenings show and wanted my opinion of a particular musician that was on stage.

Overall, it was a great experience spending time with someone who you have listened to since you were 7 yrs old.

So what was the reason they don't often play bungle in the jungle trainarollin? Just curious after reading your post. MEZ

Last time I saw him it was an Ian solo show presented like a talk show with local radio hosts feeding him questions from the audience. They'd chat a bit and then he'd get up and play a number or two and then return to the discussion. Very cool.

The two times before that it was him and Martin and three ringers that couldn't have been born when "Warchild" was new.

"Bungle in the Jungle" was done because their label wanted a hit single - something that was radio ready. Eventhough the song was a big hit, they were embarassed by it and prefer not to play it live.

Something like that...

I saw Tull about 4 years ago and they were brilliant! Sounded just like they did in 1971 when I last saw them. I thought that was quite remarkable. He's been on local radio, Albany, New York WPYX, and he surely sounds like a gentleman. Maybe he can be cantankerous, he is over 60, right? I know, no reason to be mean.

Did you happen to catch that at the State Theatre in Detroit. I think you mentioned Detroit in some of your other posts, unless I have you confused with someone else. Anyway, I wanted to tell you about my kazoo solo.

I was one of the world's biggest Tull fans in the 70s. Saw them five times, starting with the Passion Play tour in 1973 (one of the top ten shows I ever saw), going through War Child and Songs from the Wood, and finishing up with Heavy Horses in 1978.

Being a drummer, I was a big fan of both Clive Bunker and Barriemore Barlow, both very inventive percussionists.

Once I had seen them that many times, though......I don't know, it's hard to say, but I didn't enjoy much of their recorded work after that. I guess I just got into other bands....another example of how some musical artists are fantastic when you are 18 years old, but not as interesting many years later.

I've seen some of their stuff on YouTube from those years where I got out of following them.....some performances I like, others I think were dreadful. They are playing here in Atlanta this week, and I'd only go if a friend called up with a free ticket. I think I'll leave them in the 70s in bliss.

Yeah, (sorry was listening to a little CROSS EYED MARY...) OK, I'm back, yeah I think Jethro has been playing his flute for many decades. When Tull first started he was doing a bit more of a jazz thing then moved into more of a rock thing - JETHRO TULL, one of the best frontmen in the biz........ Hey, do you have a copy of yesterday's ALGEBRA II test I can look over? I can't get anymore D's this year or Dad is canceling all my on line porn subscriptions - damn prick, jut cause all his testostrone is long gone......SPANISH III also if you have it (hey, Por Favor and he's not the kind you have to wind up on Sunday....)

Ian asked me if I saw the naked lady on the stage during the Underwraps Tour. There was a tiny part where a woman streaks across the stage..lasted maybe 5 seconds.

Like you, I go WAY back with Tull. My first Tull record was a single; Living In The Past b/w Christmas Song. I was with a friend of mine when I bought it, the guy who turned me on to Tull. Haven't seen him since 1973 or something, but I still think of him every time I hear LITP.

I used to have this WEIRD, mis-pressed copy of Thick As A Brick. There was no side ONE. Side TWO was on BOTH sides. I should have kept it. It'd probably be worth something now, especially since it had the complete original "newspaper" and all.

Just to clarify, I don't mean the label was mis-printed or mis-placed. I mean the RECORD was mis-pressed. When you played the side the said "Side One" you heard Side Two. When you flipped it over and played the side that said "Side Two" you heard Side Two again. Freaky.

Two of the best concerts I've EVER attended were Tull's 1984 Underwraps tour and their 1987 Crest Of A Knave show. Was really surprised at how good they were even at that late date when Ian and Martin were the only long-standing members. When I saw them in the 90s, though they sounded fantastic in a much smaller venue, something had changed. They weren't having as much fun. The audience wasn't having as much fun. They worked hard, but that was just it. It seemed like it was just another day at the office for them.

The "Bungle" story sounds similar to John (Cougar) Mellencamp and "This Time".

BTW, I really like both "Bungle" and "This Time".

They should change the name to Jethro Dull.

I was front row center at the Detroit show. I've always loved the goofball aspect of Tull's live shows, but I've never seen a rock star of Ian's magnitude do anything as crazy as allowing audience members to play the kazoo into his own microphone in the middle of performing one of his biggest hits. I told the story on another thread titled "Ever Hear Your Own Voice On A Live Album?" Couldn't believe it when Ian came to the front of the stage with a bag full of plastic kazoos and said "I think we have some kazoo players in the audience tonight. Yes, these look like kazoo players to me!" And then he hands them out to everyone in the front row and then, in the middle of Locomotive Breath, he comes into the audience and walks along the entire front row, stopping to stick his mic in each person's face and allowing them to perform a brief "solo". My adrenaline just went through the roof and, not one to waste a once in a lifetime moment, I decided to SING (shout, really) into my kazoo, "NO WAY TOOOOOOOOO SLOW DOWN!!!" Ian had a few more people solo, then he came back to me! "NO WAY TOOOOOOOOO SLOW DOWN"!!! Ian put his arm around me and said "I think we might need an ambulance over here." After the show a couple people actually came up to me and told me it sounded really good!
