Mick Taylor in Milano - 11 November
Posted by: Lightnin' ()

The thread about Mick Taylor's concert at Alcatraz in Milano (last Sunday 11/11) seems to have disappeared.

Yesterday I read a nice review from Liddas here, his impressions after coming back from the show.
Could you post this again, Liddas ?

There was also this link to the Italian fansite (Rolling Stones Italia). Although I can only guess at the meaning of the reports from fans there...

I understand my review is lost now!

Well, this is my second thought on the concert.

It was a good one. Taylor was not particularly inspired but played very well.

Very muscular band, texas style kind of blues. Bass, second guitar and keyboards. Sugar Blue joined in for a few numbers, and was great.

Can't remember much of the set list. Some MT numbers, of course, some blues covers (Catfish Blues, Stop Breaking Down), a Dylan medeley, Knocking and No Expectations to close a more than 2 hours long set.

I noticed that all the "latin" influences and "jazzy" flavours have been reduced to minimum terms. His style seems to be very Hendrix oriented these days. Which is a great thing, but it also shows that even for the greatest it is hard to cope with the Master ... Have to say that I loved when his typical style re-emerged in the finale of the show.

By the way, no great "vibratos", but an intro to the Dylan part to die for!

Taylor seemed to be in a very good mood, I was able to chat shortly with him at the end of the concert. He signed a cd I gave him.

Not so many people attending, more or less 300. I expected much more: the tix were cheap (18 euros) and the concert was in the context of a very popular second-hand guitar show.

I should've looked at it before - Indeed, Stop Breaking Down was played, not You Gotta Move.
He also played the Layla riff during Blind Willie, didn't he?

Absolutely!

I also loved it when he introduced Blind Willie. That was after the guitarist (forgot his name) single. Taylor invited the audience to buy his CDs after the show (but I could not find them) and joking excused himself for not having something to promote, and added somithing like "we will now do a Bob Dylan number, he needs some promotion too, he needs the money ... "

Classic!

Thanks a lot for your contributions, Liddas in particular for posting his thoughts on the show again...
do you happen to know if this show was recorded?
I'd like to trade for it...
by the way, the Experience Hendrix show from Atlantic City is up on DIME...
Best wishes
Norbert

I know it was videotaped, and I am sure you will know more about it on this same channel in the future!

"know it was videotaped, and I am sure you will know more about it on this same channel in the future!"

That sounds really promising! Cant' wait to listen to some MT with Barry McCabe...last June's show in Schöppingen was really cool...

"know it was videotaped, and I am sure you will know more about it on this same channel in the future!"

There were several fans with handheld cameras in front of the stage but it was not recorded professionally.

The setlist:
- In the Dead of Night
- Fed Up with the Blues
- Late At Night + Tore Down
- Catfish Blues *
- Johnny Nobody
- It Takes Time
- Losing My Faith *
- Stop Breaking Down *
- Lonely Road (Barry McCabe)
- Blind Willie McTell
- Can't You Hear Me Knocking *
- No Expectations *

(* = with special guest Sugar Blue)

Based on box office numbers between 450 and 500 tickets were sold. Because it was a large hall, it made the crowd look quite small in comparison.

The second guitar on stage was Barry Mc Cabe's one, a very talented Irish guy that was on last Rory Gallagher's tour. www.barrymccabe.com for the bio. great concert!

I've never heard Mr. Taylor play "Stop Breaking Down." Did it sound like the EXILE arrangement or more like Robert Johnson's original? I may have to seek out a recording now.

It was played in the exile arrangement.

Funny that it was Mc Cabe and not Taylor who played the slide solo (it was Taylor's part on exile's version).

Thanks for clarifying. Pity it wasn't Mr. Taylor on the solo, but I'll still like to hear it. I was underwhelmed when the Stones played this with Robert Cray in Miami 1994. The Exile version is one of my favorite Stones tracks.
