No I saw it and his voice is actually better now. I like his voice when he sings wanna hold you and YGTS. He hasnt sounded this good since 1982. He'll never sing like in the 70s but that's alright.

Sure! Yeah, did he fall at all? Anyhow, I hope he does a short solo tour with his favourite George Jones numbers. Darlin, say it's not you... His voice is perfect. It was perfect in 1977 and once again, it's perfect.

The thing I don't understand,is why keith doesn't play a solid solo especially on SFTD.He walks or just posing and he barely touches the guitar.

Keith did play way solid solos on SftD some nights, StratoGR;
other nights he seemed less than interested in that number - in 06 as well.
i had a theory that that was his way of protesting the current arrangement of it.

Oh my god... those videos should come with a health warning. I got totally dizzy and sea sick from watching them. And the photographer is to blame! He/she must have had a few too many... :-)

Didn't they shut him off during that lead in Frankfurt?

funny...is Keith one of the bandleaders or just a paid sideman like Blondie with no say in the arrangements of the the Stones?????

Charlie actually stopped druming, and a Tech came running to adjust the drum kit - while Keith was was nearly through his first solo part.

so no, they didn't shut Keith off.

is that the show where the percussion loop screwed up the first time?
and Charlie left the drums to stop Keith from murdering the techie?
weird that it was the fourth show in 05 and the fourth show in 07, innit -
"something funny always happens we play that number" :E

Agree all the way. That arrangement was boring and was driven mainly by not stones members (Chuck and Darryl). I think he was fed up with it. And with "Miss You" as well.

Isn't the original version of SftD mainly driven by Piano and Bass (with Keith on bass BTW)?

I have problems with the suggestion Keith would protest against the arrangement of any song. I think he is more professional than that. I just think he likes to experiment with this solo. What makes the original solo (album version) so full of impact (to me anyway) is the way it mostly contains of short (blues)licks with a lot of space between them to allow the rythm session (including the piano) to carry the song. I think Keith is sometimes trying out how far apart he can place those licks. This way the grove of the song gets the most attention. SftD is a very groovy song and Keith loves groovy songs, I think.

I know, but I also know that Keith has the power to change the arrangement if he really wants to. its been the same since 1989, since then guitar work on this song slowly went down the hill and by now it has hit rock bottom. in addition to this, its a shame how the increasingly strong presence of side musicians on this song has turned this Stones milestone into a Vegas-style extravaganza. not my cup of tea, honestly.

Yeah, probably the bottom has been reached in Rome with the long Chuck's solo in that number; actually, the only low point of probably the best concert I've ever seen!

@ marcovandereijk: Niky Hopkins on piano + Keith on bass is something different than Chuck Leavell on keyboard + Darryl Jones on bass, isn't it??

Agreed.

But as it is rather hard to get Nicky to play with them these days as it is difficult to have Keith play both the guitar solo and the bass at the same time, I guess it is the best they can do to get close to the original.

smile: i guess you didn't notice what he was doing during Streets of Love at Vienna last year. :E
(later he switched to acoustic on that one, which seemed to settle him down nicely.)

Keith is not known for his fondness for percussion loops, and the fact that eight times out of ten
someone (hope you guess his name) starts woo-wooing all over the solo may not help either.
i was at ABB shows where Keith left the stage during SftD - virtually omitted the first solo -
added a third solo - refused to come back from the side ramp even though that jittery little frontman cat
was getting visibly agitated about the choreography getting messed up.
my theory that it was Keith's way of protesting against the arrangement covers all that,
which is what a theory is supposed to do, so until further notice, i'll keep it. :E
i was also at some ABB shows where Keith went and got the SftD solos real fine,
turning the number into a genuine say-hallelujah highlight, which was great.

Yeah, you're right. I can not judge about things happening at shows I did not attend. Sorry about that.

What would Keith do when a certain someone would decide it's a great idea to add Emotional Rescue to the setlist?

Keiths voice is really really inpressing.
He may got be a good singer in terms of technique and he also struggles a lot with lyrics, but he definetly knocks out Jagger in terms of emotion.
Jagger does an impressive job on all the blues numbers, As Tears Go By, She Was Hot, Rambler (Muddy Waters is saying aohhh)... though.
But Keith really shined on:
This Place Is Empty and Happy in Buenos Aires
You Got The Silver and Connection in Atlantic City
Slipping Away in Hanover
to name a few

That's the very reason why I'd rather hear a different arrangement of the song!!
