"It's about a guy on the run who's gotta say goodbye, and he doesn't really know how to say it." - Keith Richards, 2002, quoted on [www.timeisonourside.com]
.....what I am really loving is the bare bones aspect of the song.... yeah the vulnerability in Keith's voice is touching, and it reminds me a little of what Rick Rubin was doing with Cash......... Maybe this is what Keith's collaboration with Merle Haggard will be like.........I can only hope.
The title of this song gets a wider and unintentional meaning after some rusty guitar work by the riff master during the last leg of A Bigger Bang tour. Anyway, a great song IMO.

go on, Rip This - please & thank you, i mean! it's always a great gift when people point out what they love about the music.
my little remark up there about not taking it so hard was only sort of a joke: this track is so very doleful that it can be hard for me to take. it's strange that it's got that sort of unfinished quality about it, but at the same time the melancholic effect of it is so complete ... how does he do that?

Could you provide some evidence why it's a terrible Stones track?
could you read my post properly? No, seriously it gets flack because its a jazz infused ballad when many seem to tend toward an earthier, rougher siode to the stones sound and particularly keiths input to that. I like the track, but from the standpoint of the criticism it has recieved it would fit the criteria for being a bad stones track in this context.

that's right rooster.....gruff nicotine laden wraspy Tom Waits like.....beautiful.................
re: OlDKR to me it's an exquisite, raw and simple Stones country ballad that is really mature.......at this stage in their careers it's almost an un updated sound that they should be embracing and doing more of..........

smile: yep! and there's a scene in the Four Flicks documentary of him doin it, too: "kind of got my fingers burnt - [how-do-i-get-out-of-this-one pause] that's well learnt" :E

Oldkr got it right in my mind Not a Stones tune, but what a great tune! I also love Keys To Your Love which is very much a Mick solo song done by the Stones.
For that matter "Streets Of Love" is a Mick solo song to me. When I watched them play it live its all about giving MJ the entire spotlight and stage and just hanging back until it's over and then rocking again on the next track.

I don't get that impression at all. Keith was writing words on the fly in the documentary, but when has Keith ever claimed that he delivers finished product to the Stones? That's more Mick's routine. The lick and melody to Losing My Touch i'm sure he had, and there are quotes from Ronnie Wood claiming that KR knew that he wanted Wood to play steel pedal on this tune so some was in his head and some was already real. I thought Keys to Your Love and Losing My Touch were brilliantly crafted pieces, both equally showcasing their enormous talent and incredible diversity as songwriters. More like those please!
