My Experiment
Posted by: Josh2131 ()
Date: February 20, 2007 06:53

As a young Stones fan I have only really been able to experience the thrill of a new release on a few occasions. So I came up with an experiment that I began late last year. I listed every offical Stones' CD release (as well as solo) and I am listening to them in order of release (see my next post) and not listening to anything ahead. I get one new Stones album each week. I just want to make sure that my list is accurate. I will post it next and if anyone could help me with albums I forgot, albums that are out of order, etc. it would be much appreciated.

Hey, great idea.
I'm also a young fan and only experienced two releases "live": 40Licks and A Bigger Bang. During the time of Bridges To Babylon and No Security, I was no Stones fan yet.

I think that is a very good idea/experiment. respect.
I am a veteran Stoner but still do things like that. Matter of fact I just now have committed myself to re-purchasing their entire catalogue in best audio I can find/afford. So I want to also listen to it all coming in one at a time. Just started yesterday with "Hitmakers". Keep me up to date Josh.
At the moment I am filled up listening to Lucinda's new one.

>> what is Pay, Pack & Follow? <<

a John Phillips album that the Glimmer Twins co-produced;
they're both on it, along with Ronnie and Mick T and possibly Charlie as well.
it was made in 76/77 and released in 2001. it's got some nice stuff on it ...

Pay Pack and Follow really did come out in 2001, not 2002.
and of course Ronnie's on a bunch of albums with certain other bands prior to his first solo release -
several of those are quite good! maybe especially deserving of mention is his first band's stuff,
which has come out on a compilation called The Collectors' Guide to Rare British Birds
(the recordings are from 1964-66; it was released in 1999; and it's hot!)

but meanwhile: what's your criterion for including something - i mean: is one Stone on one track enough,
or does it have to be at least X number of tracks?

some others you might want (the dates i have are when the Stone involved recorded their parts,
not when they were released, so you'll need to adjust them to suit your purposes):

Peter Tosh's Bush Doctor (1978)
Ian MacLagan's Here Comes Trouble (originally released as Troublemaker, 1979)
Tom Waits's Rain Dogs (1985)
the Hail Hail Rock & Roll soundtrack (1986)
Weird Nightmare (the Mingus tribute - 1990)
Johnnie Johnson's Johnnie B Bad (1991)
George Jones's Bradley Barn Sessions (1994)
the Chieftains' Long Black Veil (1995)
Scotty Moore's All the King's Men (1996)
Jimmy Rogers's Blues Blues Blues (1997)
BB King's Deuces Wild (1997)
Sheryl Crow Live from Central Park (1999)
Ronnie Spector's Last of the Rock Stars (2000)
Hubert Sumlin's About Them Shoes (2000)
Peter Wolf's Sleepless (2001)
The Concert for New York City (2001)
Tim Ries's Rolling Stones Project (2002)
Willie Nelson's Stars & Guitars (2002)
Jerry Lee Lewis's Last Man Standing (2002)
Toots & the Maytalls' True Love (2003)
Willie Nelson's Outlaws & Angels (2004)

there's more, of course, but those are all pretty outstanding in various ways,
and they're all available, currently in print, etc.
(do you also want to get into ones that have gone out of print?)

If I were doing what your doing (Which Im not) but, If i was I would move R&R circus up on the list to right after beggars banquet because thats when It was, even though it was released in 96.

Re: My Experiment
Posted by: with sssoul ()

well but i think what Josh2131 is aiming at is "reconstructing" the experience
of hearing them as they became available, as fans did at the time.
i pretty regularly go through the whole catalogue (and/or my bootlegs) in chronological order
and it's always a real enlightening experience. but his idea of spending a week on each one
is a really nice touch - sort of a "time-lapse" version of experiencing the releases as they appeared.

Re: My Experiment
Posted by: ryanpow ()

thats fair enough.

I have one more suggestion though:

to play the singles when they came out. for example, playing JJF/child of the moon after satanic. M.

and then play JFF again later when you play Hot rocks.

Impressive list , some I haven't heard . And I'm Ancient !!

Re: My Experiment

I'm only 24! I have R&R Circus later because only those at the show heard it when it was done since it was not released or shown on TV. For the ABKCO singles collection I am listening to them by release date and not album.

My general rule is that Stones albums, solo albums, and albums heavily featuring stones members (e.g. pay, pack, and follow) get there own week. Albums with only single track contributions (eg. performance) will be done with the album nearest there release date.

with sssoul, I will be adding all the albums on your list. In addition to the above hueristic, I am doing only official releases and only those that I can find a CD copy of.

thanks everyone for the input so far!

josh.

Re: My Experiment

cool - thanks for the elucidation of your principles. in that case you'll also want these -
some of them are out of print, but they're all official releases and still findable on CD:

Billy Preston's That's the Way God Planned It (1969)
Alexis Korner's Musically Rich & Famous (1974/75)
the Neville Brothers' Uptown (1986 - they also have a CD called Uptown Rising, but it's Uptown you want)
Feargal Sharkey's Wish (1987)
Ziggy Marley's Conscious Party (1988)
Tom Waits's Bone Machine (1991)
John Lee Hooker's Mr Lucky (1991)
Ivan Neville's Thanks (1991)
Marianne Faithfull: A Collection (1993)
Bobby Womack's Resurrection (1993)
Bo Diddley's Man Amongst Men (1995)
Timeless (Hank Williams tribute album - 2001)
Les Paul's American Made World Played (2004)

you can also find Black Uhuru's Shine Eye Gal (1979) on CD compilations,
and i bet Aretha Franklin's JJF (1986) is around on compilations too.

as before, the dates i'm giving are the dates when the Stone involved recorded their parts,
which is in some cases pretty different from the release date (for example Ronnie Spector's album
came out in 2006 and Hubert Sumlin's in 2005) so you'll need to adjust them for your purposes.

Does anyone else think that this guy could be obsessive enough to become a serial killer? I mean, it could be viewed as obsessive to buy everything that the stones erver did or ever were involved with - but it is *OBSESSIVE* to do it according to a strict method and timetable.

What happens if the CD you want to listen to is out of stock that week. Do you then have to go out and take out your frustration on small animals? How long until this turns into a craving to cut up humans and make stones toungue logos out of their cut off faces?

Interesting thing, but, but... Poor Josh...
Whatcha about to do is reconstructin' a couple of hundred years
of pretty intense musical activity and its listening...
Acutally I tried something similar within a couple of year,
but I have exluded the main part of Woody's solo work
and also large portions of Jagger's & Wymans ditto.

At the moment I'm stuck in Bootlegdome.

Do you think you have enough self-discipline to wait 15 months before sampling the delights of the new Wyman compilation?

Personally, I think you may have already killed yourself by the end of November '07 as a result of an overkill of 'Stuff'

Avent been there; but Aberdeen, Inverness
& the Hebrides could be a starter?

Hey.

You're forgetting the "Hope Floats" soundtrack from 1998, which included the acoustic re-make of "Honest I Do".

Forget about "The Rolling Stones" & "No. 2", as they not nessecary anymore (all the tracks are avaliable elsewhere) and theyare also deleted from the catalouge now...
