Agree w/ GR but even more wont see them without Mr Lord. Topi at the board saw them at Helsinki thou & were very pleased. He posted me some recordings from that gig, they're out there somewhere.
I just saw them last Friday night in Detroit. My ten year old son has taught himself "Smoke On The Water" so he was thrilled to see the "real" thing. Like the modern Stones, 'Purple's show is much tighter and perhaps choreographed as opposed to the long, meandering performnces in the '7os. There were a LOT of people there too although it would appear, thanks to coupons, most folks only paid about $10 apiece. I paid $15 but more than got my money's worth.
Holy Shit, I saw this show on Friday as well. What a fun concert. (R, you and I seem to travel in the same circles. Stooges next Tuesday?) They rocked. Gillian is amazing, and the band had an obviously great time. Smiles all around. Really worth the price of admission. Catch these guys if you can. I paid $20.50 to sit 12th row dead center. Nice.
well i respect the jon lord and blackmore fans of course...classic dp fan myself...but frankly, i'm about hugely interested in ian gillian and would see him solo or playing with anybody at all...just over the top ian gillian fan. i get that machine head is total bliss...really do...but just to know gillian is out there singing blows me away...i'd like to get me some of that.
I totally agree Beelyboy!! I saw them twice in Sinagpore with Gillian, first time Lord was still with them, the second time he wasn't, and they were, or should I say Ian was, STUNNING. Really fantastic. Full of rock and force. Gillian hasn't lost anything in his range at all. I understand as you said about the Blackmore fans, but really close your eyes and it is the Purple of old, reminded me of Made in Japan...and of course they opened with My Woman from Tokyo! I really wished Ian would have wailed Child in Time!!
I saw Gillan as 'Gillan' in 1980, twice. Also I saw Whitesnake and Rainbow so i have seen the Mk2 lineup and Mk3 (except Glen Hughes), just not all in one go !!

I saw the Stooges at Pine Knob a few years ago at the onset of the reunion (as well as "back in the day") and topping THAT would have been impossible - especially in the staid environs of Meadowbrook. Same reason I passed on seeing them at The Fox - too hoity toity for The Stooges. I need to see them somewhere you can set fire to...:-)
Saw them at Pine Knob, saw them at the Fox, will see them at Meadowbrook. Seen Iggy solo a few times as well, but never the Stooges "back in the day", so I'll see the Stooges now anywhere, any time I can!
