Going to see them at Wembley tomorrow night. Anyone seen them before? Don't know an awful lot of their stuff so hoping the spectacle makes up for that.

they were good back in their day (late 80's). but since then they've become just another corporate machine. the Metallica of today is about as far away from what they once were as its possible to be

Cliff will be spinning

they're playing loads of old stuff right now though so that's something i guess

I think I'd appreciate them more now.
Saw them back in 1986, and at that point they were not full-grown.

Please post a review afterwards in this thread! smiling smiley

bad, boring music as interesting as Britney Spears, and as dangerous as the Muppet Show

Will do.

I haven't paid for the ticket (I'm very lucky in that the company I work for has a box at Wembley and there isn't much demand for events like Muse and Metallica!!) so I'll have a fairly open mind.

As a response to hr77 I can say the Black Album is a true classic.
If you dont get moved by that there's not much hope imho.
Best heavy rock band (besides Sabbath?) still goin' strong.
I'd rather Metallica than Purple minus Lord & minus Blackmore!

Hope ya'd not be disappointed, "Pap" smiling smiley ... Greetings "Bab"

No worries, I dont dig "heavy metal sickness" as Frank Zappa once called it, the only thing that Metallica ever moved is my bowels

I saw them three years ago and they put on a fantastic show. Most of the stuff they played was the classic stuff from the eighties. They are perfectly aware of how bad their music has become in recent years but they are still one of the best bands when it comes to concerts.

I agree with stones_serb... I love the old stuff by Metallica (including "The black album"), and seems like that's what they play nowadays, apart from one or two songs from Load/Reload..

Seen them twice before, and they've been great! Puts on a great show - going to see them again at as sold out Valle Hovin (Oslo) 10th of July, and really looking forward to it.

I saw them in 86 three days before that truck killed Cliff Burton.

The first 4 albums are some of the greatest music ever laid down in all of human history. From the Black Album forward, not so good. At least they have a decent setlist this tour so it should be a good show.

There is Heavy Metal, other Metal & Heavy rock or Hard rock.
Metallica is for me some of the latter two terms, the ones that
ends with -rock. I feel they are moving in a lost direction
studio-wise. They start where Lizzy ends.
Rootsy hard rock. Just which they'd quit the fast-race.
Guess they have to grow a little older first.
Hetfield is same age as me & Gazza, 43-44.

I m not a big metal fan, however, I like Metallica. I saw them once when they toured with GnR in '92. I went into the show more of a Gnr fan and left the show more of a Metallica fan. I thought they played extremely well. I doubt they play as well they did then but who does. Their sound doesn t rock anymore and the new bassist doesn t fit with them in my opinion. Still could be a fun day.

Outstanding band. I saw them open for the Stones in San Francisco. Kicked ass. That looks like a good setlist.I would love to see them again on their own tour.

It's an excellent setlist.A lot of warhorses and a couple of surprises butMetallica doesn't have as many songs to choose from as The Stones do.

James Hetfield is hot.

I used to be obsessed with them, but haven't given them too much play since St. Anger, which was largely an absurd travesty of an album.

They're still fantastic live, and I have hope that Rick Rubin will coax them into re-embracing their old-school thrash roots, as their recent setlists have reflected.

Metallica were a touring machine back then. Too bad I was only 13 when that tour was going on.

Lars' drumming is pretty shitty nowadays...lots of missed fills and sloppy or nonexistent double bass. James howls more than growls, and Kirk over-uses his wah wah.

Still, they're a helluva lot of fun live. I wouldn't pass up a chance to see them.

I don't think the current setlists (going back to 2003) are because they are interested in revisiting their thrash roots so much as because in 2003, their collective back catalog outsold St Anger 2:1, officially designating them as a nostalgia act.

I always like seeing Metallica. I was happy to be at the show in SF that they opened for the Stones. Good stuff.

Metallica is an amazing live act and their latest set lists are pretty close of die hard fans dream set lists. I mean the entire full on versions of Master Of Puppets, Disposable Heroes, And Justice For All and Ride The Lightning along with the warhorses (Creeping Death, Bellz, One, Sandman, ...) in one show? @#$%& amazing if you ask me! You're going to have a great time!

Oh, not to mention they are playing fuking ORION!! I hope they play Fuel as well as it's a great live song!

Yeah I was a little late to the party on Metallica......Starting getting into 'em mainly because I have a buddy who's a huge fan. Then I got into them more after the black album. I was very impressed when I saw them open for the Stones. Can't wait for them to play their hometown again.

Good point, but I believe that they've come to the conclusion that, at this point in their careers, branching out and following trends won't get them anywhere except further ostracized by the metal community.

Trying to put out a decent, well-produced thrash album might be their last shot at saving face.

It would be great if they did but I don't think they have the same kind of fire they did 20 years ago to make it possible. Also at this point making a thrash album means they care more appealing to the same 20,000 people who buy every Testament or Death Angel record than trying to expand on the 1.5 million who bought St Anger. It would be interesting to see what happens but I haven't really cared about Metallica since I first heard the Black Album though I get the occassional bootleg here and there.
