I have tried on net to buy train tix but can only get time tables.Got price from one agency that wanted over US$100 for a 4 or 5 hour trip!!!!!Price at station is probably closer to $30.Any ideas as I think it will be O.K.to get them as soon as I arrive in Budapest but being middle of summer you never know!!!!!!

for the direct trains the price is around 39 euros, as far as i know;
there are a few nondirect connections as well (entailing changing trains, i mean)
i have no idea about how easy it will be to get tickets at the last minute,
but since there are several choices it seems like it should be okay? don't know.

It will be absolutely no problem to get train tickets even at the last minute.
I use trains very often in Europe and if you don't go over-night, you really don't need to pre-book tickets.

Thanks for the info.Station is Keleti I believe and I guessed it would be O.K. when I get there which is 2 days before we depart for Brno.I think 2 EC trains go there(faster) and the rest are slower ones so should be fine I tell myself!!!!!!!

I also think station we need in Budapest is Keleti but are there several stations in Brno? When you try to do a search on the RailEurope site, you are asked whether you want Brno Hlavni, Brno Kralovo Pole or Brno Slatina. I have no idea what these are. Plus www.raileurope.com (US site) gives you schedules and prices, whereas www.raileurope.co.uk comes up with nothing at all for 21 July. All very confusing.
