OT: Pearl Jam -- THE Classic American Rock Band?
Posted by: bassplayer617 ()

So, Eddie seemed a bit overwhelmed by singing with Mick on "Wild Horses", but I'm listening to a classic show by Pearl Jam right now. The marathon gig played at State College PA on May 3, 2003 is one of the best shows I've heard by anybody.

In musical terms, these guys now qualify as veterans, and have a rabidly -faithful fanbase. I call them the classic American rock band because they can't be confused as coming from any other country but the USA. They've taken all the previous influences and coalesced it into a sound that is distinctly their own.

Some might argue for the Black Crowes, BUT they have, to my ears, a derivative British sound.

Aerosmith? No. Creedence Clearwater Revival? An argument could possibly be made for them.

Submitted as a discussion point.

Pearl Jam RULES....

Though...I would hesitate to call them "classic"....they seem more "Alt Rock" to me, though some of their songs certainly classify as the "classic rock" genre....

I think the Black Crowes are a definitive American Rock Band, as is Lynyrd Skynyrd....both are very "southern blues based" in their sound (Skynyrd much more so)....

Creedence I would throw in this "classic American Rock Band" category as well....

I dunno...my take on the "Classic American Rock Band" is one which has that "southern bluesy feel" to their music, which Pearl Jam really doesn't fall into....

Guns n' Roses had it as well.....in fact, they had it ALL...but....well...we all know that story...Axl is a Dbag....

Anyway....I would say....see Pearl Jam and the Crowes as much as humanly possible regardless.....

and SOMEBODY get Eddie Vedder to convince Mick that releasing Soundboards of live performances is a GOOD THING.....

Check out Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden, 2003 if you want an amazing live soundboard....

My suggestions:
The Boss & E-Street Band; The Doors;
Canned Heat Mk I & The Doors.
And maybe PJ; love'em much.

OH...BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE.....how could I forget him & E-Street...good call, BB...

I personally think The Doors were/are overrated....though, they did have a pretty unique sound on some tunes....

The E-Street Band was a deliberate oversight. Yeah, they are the ones, heh heh.

One listen to the remastered "Born to Run" is all it takes. The "Wall of Sound" reborn and perfected. All-American.

One can only surmise if the Stones' adaptation of this sound to their stage band was inspired by them. Think on this for a moment.

One of my favourite bands. Saw them last year in Lisbon and what a concert. They have a lot of fans here in Portugal and the crowd go nuts. The DVD of MSG in 2003 is great. For me is the best band live these days, after the Stonessmiling smiley

Would it be considered hijacking this thread or even political if I brought up Pearl Jam's Willingness to take on the Ticketbastard machine?

Those guys stood up for what they believed in even if it had an effect on their own bottom line at the time.

I think Pearl Jam is the quintessential "contemporary" band as they still lead this current musical era.

Aerosmith would be the classic as they've been around 35+ years or so...

Before them, how about the Beach Boys? Not now of course, but until 1983 or so...

Elvis, if you consider him to be "a band"...he was big enough by himself to be considered a band perhaps?

Hmmmm....now while the Bus Boys had their moment in the sun, not sure they maintained enough staying power to earn the term classic. But they were damn good!
Any chance for a Bus Boys reunion tour perhaps?

I saw the Bus Boys at a club in the early 1980's - what a great show. I had forgotten all about them!

A little too sad and self-absorbed for me.

My nominees - Elvis' boys, The Crickets, CCR, Bruce & the E-Streeters, Skynyrd, Allmans, several others.

Pearl Jam,an excellent band all the way around. Yellow Ledbetter is a great song. But the classic american band. No,that would have to go to more veteran acts like Aerosmith,Bruce or The Eagles.

I love Pearl Jam. Great live show. Nothing fancy just the band playing their guts out for colse to three hours. Different setlist every night. They bring it everynight. Tickets are very reasonable and they still record great new music.

I've tried to get into them but it never happened. I find them to be boring and repetitive. All melodies sound the same. Do The Evolution is a great song though.

My vote goes to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. They are about as classic as you get. I saw Pearl Jam open for the at last years SUMMERFEST in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (see website for this great 11 day music fest). Pearl Jam was great. But when Eddie came out on stage to do American Girl with them, he looked like the classic fan in total awe.

i was a Nirvana fan, just sort of lost interest in the whole "genre" after Kurt died. i dunno, i just hate eddie vedder's voice in Pearl Jam, can't listen to him.

hey do some Stones people actually like the Grateful Dead ?!! it always seems like the 2 are sort of mutally exclusive. I've always loved the Dead ... but the Stones a lot more smiling smiley

My wife would say Pearl Jam, especially after seeing them in Madrid last year. But I'd go with the original lineup of The Allman Brothers Band.

Or Elvis, Scotty, and Bill.
