YCAGWYW singalongs Europe '76

I really don't like the versions of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" from Europen '76 where they did the singalongs. They scrapped the last verse in favor of the middle singalong part and it kills the song for me. But anywayz, does anybody know if they just did this for the Paris shows that were filmed and recorded for the live album?

I know on boots from early in the tour, they do the full version, with all four verses and no singalong. I thought that they started doing the singalong version later on in the tour but I was listening to Vienna 6/23/76 the other day (last show of the tour, absolutely smoking performance btw) and they did the full version. I could go back through all my '76 shows and listen to every version of YCAGWYW and figure it out for myself but I figured maybe somebody here knew.

Was that annoying singalong done just for the cameras?

In Europe in '76? Nah. I've got several shows with versions where they don't do that singalong.

For what it's worth, I'm currently listening to the concert from 05-29-1976 The Hague. Just passed YCAGWYW, and that one included crowd singalong.

That means it wasn't just done for the camera's then. They didn't do the singalong at either Munster show on 4/30 and I don't think they did it at Kiel on 5/2 or Berlin on 5/3 but honestly it's been a while since I've heard the Berlin recording. They also didn't do the singalong at Vienna on 6/23 which was the last show.

BTW, Sohoe, look at my post over on Hot Stuff and shoot me an email if neccessary.

Apparently not, but I'm not the biggest fan of the '76 tour, so I'm probably not the right one to answer this question.

...I'm going to the Hot Stuff section right away

The earliest Stones shows I saw were 69 and 72.

Except if you count Keith,
Mick sang alone,

It was better without the Sing-Along, IMO.

... but how to stop everyone from singing along?

Maybe if Mick himself asks the audience not to sing.
"Usually when we do this next number, everybody sings along..." he might say. "But this time we wanna sing it alone for ya... Thank you... Yes, thank you. We're gonna ask you not to sing along this time... Yes, thank you..."

"are you going to be quiet or what?!"
it worked (sort of!) in 69 - it could work now!

of course, leaving it out of the set entirely is also a way ...

Do you understand what I mean when I say "singalong"? I'm talking about the versions of the song where they break it down in the middle and do this singalong thing specifically for the audience. They've done it on YCAGWYW since the European tour of '76.

I don't mean fans singing along with the Stones. Of course they're always gonna do that. I just mean the parts where the guitars drop out and Mick goads the crowd through a couple of choruses then tells them how good they sound and all that. He'll say "now you can't....." and then let the crowd finish it. Know what I mean?

I think maybe you misunderstood what I was taking about.

When Mick shouts "Just the ladies!"
You Can't Always Get...
"Now the guys!"
You Can't Always Get...
I know which part you mean...

Right well I couldn't tell from your posts. It sounded like you were just talking about fans singing along with Mick. Maybe you were trying to be sarcastic, I dunno.

I've never heard Jagger say "just the ladies" or "now the guys" during the singalongs.

Shoot, I love the singalongs, its a special moment at any show. Just listen to the Knebworth sing-a-long or shit, any '81/82 boot.

"Now its our turn right... I want you to sing really pretty and really sweet"

or "Do you all know you can't always get what you want? Do you all know you can't always get what you want?"

Sometimes when I've hear Mick say that or
something like,"Okay... now just the people with dark hair...:
well. it's then that I think that I can be just a bit too sarcastic.

Love sing alongs...brings unity....and in 76 the Jagger rap between the singing was so funny!

I'm not a singalong-person, but I don't see the problem with a choir for YCAGWYW. Maybe it's not too nice to listen to at an audience recording, but it must have felt great for the persons who were there.
It's funny in Kansas City 75 when Mick says...."we have a special choir for this one [Wild Horses] - which is....you!"

I love to hear an audience recording where you can hear the crowd singing along like a great choir to the chorus. I think the recording from the Hague 5/29/76 is awesome because you can hear the crowd singing along during the choruses but it doesn't drown the music out. It's not annoying like it is when one dumbass sitting next to the microphone is singing his heart out, out of time and off key along with EVERY word..

I listened to that Kansas City '75 show the other day. I've noticed something with alot of mid-to late '70's audience recordings. Lots of times, the first two or three songs will not sound very good, as far the recording quality goes. But it gets better after the first few songs. I dunno why.....but I've noticed that with that Kansas City '75 show and the two Munster '76 recordings and nearly every '78 audience recording I've got. Chicago '78 is a good example.

There's also some quite funny ones, where the person next to the recorder shouts louder than the music & the audience combined...sometimes even singing the guitar parts, instead of the lyrics..lol - as in Rotterdam 73 - maybe it's Nico from IORR?
