OT: Morrissey at the Hollywood Bowl

I went to see Morrissey at the Hollywood Bowl tonight. It was my first time seeing him. I'll admit, I'm not a fanatic but I just wanted to go to see what the hype is about. Although I found myself laughing out loud several times, I kinda get why people who aren't into the Stones laugh at me for traveling cross country/ocean to see the boys. Everyone was into him although I found the lyrics laughable. I've always heard a Morrissey show is depressing. The show literally began with a list of horrible things being read, including: cancer, famine, death, etc. The songs sounded great but when you listen to lyrics it really becomes laughable. "I was driving my car and yes, I broke my spine." Really? The crowd loved it and I'll admit I enjoyed it, but it gave me lots of patience for people that dis my Stones fanaticism. I was pleased he performed "How Soon Is Now" from his Smiths days. That really is a great song.

The intro tape you heard is "Imperfect List" by Big Hard Excellent Fish.

Thanks. I was curious as to what that was. Again, I enjoyed the show. He really had the crowd in his palm.

I dunno about his solo work, but i don't find his lyrics from The Smiths era laughable.Actually,I find them to be excellent with a fine doze of irony.

Take these lyrics for example:

"And if double decker bus crushes into us,to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die"

Excellent.

I've never thought of Moz as miserable at all. The lyrics are frequently very very funny. He maintained that dose of humour in his solo stuff right up to and including Vauxhall And I (his masterpiece - and, arguably, the last great album he's made to date; I don't like the last three).

And you're spot on about the irony. It got him into a lot of trouble in the early 90s, when he wrote a song called The National Front Disco and got very unfairly and very stupidly accused of racism.

Arguably, one of the true greats of British music, though he'd probably hate anyone for actually saying so. A brilliant lyricist, a fine songwriter, and a superb performer.

Seen him several times over the years, though sadly, not with the Smiths.

"...and he stole from the rich and the poor, and the not-very-rich, and the very poor."

Inimitable.
