Best Recorder To Tape Live Shows
Posted by: hutz13 ()

I know this topic has been discussed before but I couldn't find the thread. Can anyone recommend the best recorder for live shows. Lower price is better of course but I'm open to all suggestions.

Thanks

Jim

SONY MZ-RH1 Hi-MD (minidisc) Field Recorder.

Records in Full Fidelity PCM (no compression): 93 min per Hi-MD.
or
CD quality Hi-SP: 122 min per Std MD. Over 2 hours of recording with No disc changes.

Invest in a good set of stereo microphones and a bass rolloff battery box. Then pracice recording as many shows as possible.

My advice is LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION.

I buy the obstructed view seats on the extreme left or right of the stage...never behind unless you are at least 10 rows up. Obstructed view means obstructed by speakers. I like to be as close as possible to speakers. Even an analog Radio shack recorder recording can sound like a soundboard if you are 15 ft from the speakers at an arena or stadium.

The minidisc recorder listed above will do the job flawlessly. I highly recommend [core-sound.com] for mics. They offer top of the line mics as well as budget-priced recording gear which will do the job. HIGHLY recommended.

The best recorder for "taping" live shows has to be the one used for Stuttgart '99 German Girls. One of the best,if not the best Stones audience recording out there, sound quality wise (great performance as well).I wish I knew what was used to record that one.

Seen every tour since Still Life. And whilst entering the concert venue I have always been searched. So how do you get the recording equipment in? Or is that a trade secret?

Those'll be where the shitty recordings come from.

I use Sonic Studios mics and a Sony PCM1 DAT recorder. However DATs are no longer manufactured. Taping conditions at Stones shows plain suck due to the lame ass crowds they draw though at GA shows you will probably have better luck. Probably why better recordings tend to come out of Europe.

How was security at Werchster? Was it easy to get a MD-sized recorder in?

Also what was the security like at Stade de France last year? (Not that I'm suggesting for one minute that I'd consider taping the show myself you understand!)

You can get a md recorder in in your undies no problem unless you really have a big dick, then find another space. Some suggestions mentioned above.

Put the tape recorded down the front of your pants...adject so it does not shift or fall down a pant leg...put a so-called fanny pack filled with junk (keys, wallet, etc) in front of you like a belt, but have the pouch part in front of you...it will look queer, however, they will ask you to unzip it and they will look inside for a couple seconds and maybe feel the bottom of it WHILE COVERING UP ANY BULDGE from the tape recorder. Knock on wood...never been caught once doing this.

Is it possible to adjust the recording level with the Sony Hi-MD while recording? I remember that Sony MD's didn't have that feature while Sharp MD's did.

I've made recordings with both a minidisc recorder (Sharp) and a Sony DAT D8 recorder. I prefered the DAT because I didn't have to change discs, but I think that the Hi-MD is the one I'd use now if I would still make recordings, it's so small! Stick it in your pants and no one will notice.

Once you are inside the venue connect the whole thing and wait patiently. When you see the camera men take their seats you know the show will start with 10-15 minutes or, so be ready!

And it's so great to walk out knowing you've got the show!

With the mz-rh1 you can adjust the levels during recording a big improvement to the older hi md's and older md units. But only with the mz-rh1.

Nico's, great alternative but how do you get the motherfricker through the gates???

Edirol R-09 is the best recorder (DAT qualities), then you need hyper cardioids microphones with a battery box.
