All About You -vs- We Had It All

Do you think the right decision was made to include "All About You" over "We Had It All" on Emotional Rescue...I've read over the years Keith saying We Had It All was too personal.

But on song for song basis...which do you think is better?

I'd say both.
And Emotional Rescue would have been one of my fav albums.
Maybe they're two the songs by Keith I prefer.

I prefer We Had It All since I don't like ABY at all!

... seems weird that he'd say We Had It All is "too personal" since [a] he didn't write it,
and All About You is mighty close to the bone
(i've never read/heard that he ever said that, but ... what do i know)

Funny you mention We Had It All. I've always loved that song, and hoped that since Keith was trying out quite a bit of his numbers and had pulled out Nearness of You & Learning the Game from the bootleg stash, that he might give this one a go too.

We Had It All? What album is that on. It's not on my copy of Emotional Rescue!

It's available on bootleg in perfect quality.
Keith also did it with Wille Nelson in 2004

what Erik said! :E
it's on the Outlaws & Angels dvd & cd - a 2004 duet with Willie Nelson;
Keith's (beautiful!) 1979 version is floating around on bootlegs

Well, yeah, I was happy to hear the Willie version, but I'd love to hear Keith do it with the Stones.

We Had It All was recorded in 1979, but was never released. Keith on vocals & piano, Ronnie on pedal steel and Sugar Blue on harp.

It was written by Troy Seals and Donnie Fritts.

Both good songs in their own way, but you cant get much more personal than Keith does in 'All About You', whereas, as posinted out above, he didnt even write We Had It all.

Makes more sense financially to include one of your own compositions on a record instead of a cover version.

Not really. Some Girls, Black And Blue and IORR included one cover song each. Would the Stones be so desperate this time not to include any cover song only due to financial reasons? I don't know why they didn't put We Had It All on ER, but it's one of my alltime favourite outtakes.

We Had It All is good, but they made the right decision. All About You is much a better song.

Didnt say it was ONLY due to financial reasons, but if you have 2 songs of equal quality and one is your own composition, its a no brainer which one youre going to pick

Besides, there werent too many finished songs left over for IORR and Black and Blue, and what there were tended to be covers, so its a moot point.
