OT - Greatest Back To Back Albums By Artists

I was thinking about this. There are so many times when a band or singer/writer has put out two sh*t-hot albums back to back.
Like
Sticky Fingers - Exile on Mainstreet
Highway 61 Revisited - Blonde On Blonde
Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure

Really the Stones own this category! For the Beatles, I'd put Abbey Road - Let It Be, but look at the Stones run here...

Beggars Banquet - Let It Bleed - Ya-Yas - Sticky Fingers - Exile

Is it any wonder this is the golden age of the band? That's five in a row - surely no other band comes close.

But then they re-emerge and almost do it again:

The London Years - Flashpoint - Voodoo Lounge - Stripped

We got most of the big names out of the way. Maybe still Springsteen or Bowie.
Ziggy Stardust - Al;ladin Sane
Transformer - Berlin
Electric Warrior - The Slider
After The Goldrush - Harvest
1999 - Purple Rain
Every Picture Tells.. - Never a Dull Moment
Carwheels on a Gravel - Essence

The Stones certainly have had their Golden Era but I don't think they own it. That's sort of the point: many artists hit these runs. Like Springsteen
The Wild The Innocent - Born To Run - Darkness At the Edeg - The River - Nebraska - Born in the USA. That was quite a stretch.
I was wondering about some not so wellknown acts. Like Elliott Smith, or Nick Drake. Nick Cave, Ryan Adams.

Now see, CD, I hardly ever pay the Wild or Darkness...

I'd go Born in the USA - Tunnel of Love, The Rising - Seeger Sessions

I think you're out of sequence Voodoo because somewhere between Tunnel and The Rising is the piece of shite (at least in my opinion) The Ghost of Tom Joad.

I like Erik's the best, but here's another:

American Beauty/Workingman's Dead (Grateful Dead)

Allman Brothers Band/Idlewild South (these were later combined to make one double album called Beginnings)

Astral Weeks/Moondance

actually U2 had a good run too...

Unforgettable Fire - Joshua Tree - Rattle & Hum (my personal fave) - Achtung Baby - and you know a lot of people dis Zooropa but I kinda liked it. Though I don't listen to it as much as the others, so I guess it wouldn't count LOL

The Ghost Of Tom Joad...? Shitty ? The shitty ones would be Lucky Town and Human Touch from 1992.

Strange list anyway...when mentioning Bruce in this thread, the obvious run would be
Born To Run - Darkness On The Edge Of Town - The River - Nebraska.

And, thanks, Lukester !

Thanks Lukester, good to be back.

I checked in a couple of days ago to see what was kicking around, saw a "list" thread, couldn't help myself, had to jump back in.

Gotcha!

Dylan's triple whammy of Bringing It All back Home-Highway 61 Revisited-Blonde on Blonde (which was a double), plus a couple of killer non-album singles all in the space of 15 months in 1965-66 is unsurpassed IMO. I could add The Basement Tapes (unreleased until 1975) and John Wesley Harding - both recorded in 1967 for good measure

Then in the 70's, another back to back of Blood on The Tracks-Desire (and arguably Street Legal two years late)

The Stones' back to back of Sticky Fingers-Exile in the space of 12 months would be the only other act who runs that close for great albums in such a short time frame. add in Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed which preceded them.

Bruce's golden quartet of The Wild, The Innocent/Born To Run/Darkness on the edge of town/The River is up there too (1973-80). Nebraska (1982) as well I suppose. I think the standard dipped dramatically with Born In the USA.

The Who's pair of Whos' Next followed by Quadrophenia (1971-73)

some others ;
Neil Young - On the Beach/Tonights the Night/Zuma (1974-75)
Beatles - Rubber Soul/Revolver (1965-66)
Lou reed - Transformer/Berlin (1972-73)
Bowie - Lodger/Scary Monsters (1979-80)
Johnny Cash's American Recordings series (1993 - 2000). the first 3 anyway.
red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication/By The Way (1999-2002)
Bob Marley - Burnin'/Catch A Fire (1972-73)

Dylan's current run of three as well, although theres 9 years between them!
