Elmo's review of the Blind Willie McTell Blues Festival

Saturday, May 12, Thomson, GA

Pleasant day and a super line-up of talent. Got several much-needed showers of rain during the day, but lightning cut Delbert McClinton's set short.

Breeze Kings - a tight band with a bright future.

The Wiyos - lots of talent but not my cup of tea. Vaudeville type act.

John Nemeth - This band reminded me of The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Bass player using a stand-up bass was a cool touch.

Rory Block - This girl was unreal. Acoustic blues right by herself. Cute, aging hippie chick who plays Robert Johnson style guitar! Several of Robert's songs, Muddy too. Several gospel numbers including a great acapello version of "Can't No Grave Hold My Body Down". She played 4 different Martins and made 'em sing, cry, whine, and holler.

Francine Reed with The Shadows - WOW! Hard to describe how good she was. A female Otis Redding with a scoop of Aretha thrown in. She's from Chicago originally, but this was undiluted southern soul at its best. I'm her new biggest fan.

Delbert McClinton - he was in fine voice and had a really tight band. Notable was his young piano player and the horn section. He had just finished "Old Weakness" (about the 8th or 9th song) when the lightning moved in. Nobody was minding the rain - everyone was soaked. The only disappointment was that his set was cut short.

Oh yeah - good food, cold beer, and pretty women (not all of 'em though!).

Please check out these people and their websites. The Blind Willie McTell Festival site too.

Thanks for the review Elmo. Too bad Delbert's show got cut short. Talk about a double edge sword. You need the rain, but then you run the risk of more fires with the lightning....It's alway's something.

The main fire I was concerned about was my ass. Not much setlist complaining as he didn't have time to get to the warhorses - "Giving It Up For Your Love", "B-Movie" etc.. Tons of fun though.

Lukester, Delbert smiled so much that I thought it might be chemically induced. Just a thought. Very hot band though.

Her bio says she's from the Greenwich Village area of NYC. She grew up around the folkie scene.
