I love discovering their intricate production in mid 60's. It is interesting because most the time they played it all themselves and you can piece it together from the 4/or 8 track recordings. Here in OOT they do this cool thing with the Bass that I never noticed until now. I was listening and was paying attention to that organ in the beginning. Those very deep notes that just go "bomp bomp" under the marim, bas. And I wondered if whoever had to sit there and do that through the entire tune. Sure enough when it kicks in a bit he is still doing it. But when the chorus kicks in all the way Wyman comes in on overdubbed Bass in the left channel. Then the low 3rd verse comes back where Keith has that 12 string overdubbed with those little runs in between the singing. ("The girl that wants to run away..")And the organ is back doing the Bass, only to be replaced by Bill again for the chorus; they do the whole thing again before Bill takes it home. They knew that they had over 5 minutes to deal with, so they make it interesting. Towards the end they even start adding more b/u vox. The organ begins playing chords in the higher register and the marimbas are audible freestyling at the VERY end. This is actually not one of my favorite tunes. But when "overlooked" song is always mentioned this is one that comes to my mind. I am surprised they didn't play it live back then; or push it a little as the next single kind of deal. Even if it had been shortened...
"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."
Can't agree more, its a great track... in fact Aftermath (UK version LP) is one of my favourite albums of all time and I still play it a lot - I think it was actually the first LP where they wrote all the songs themselves and it is most certainly a classic 60s album.
The Rolling Stones wrote very good pop-tunes with very mean lyrics''Take it or leave It''is a good excample to....OOT..would be a big exiting new suprise in concert...yes indeed...they could do it in everyway..like a real hard rock version..i love this song.
the 1966 period for the stones seems to be forgotten in the recent tours.
