I was just thinking about Don Ho the other day when I saw a Dan Ho listed on Pollstar. Is that his son?

I think Don had a TV show back in the '60s or '70s as well, or perhaps had a regular guest appearance on someone else's.

Ho's name has been in the news in the U.S. all week, and now this.

Rest in peace. He brought a lot of joy into the world through his music. I don't know much about him, but he certainly had staying power.

Yeah. Monkey, it's ironic to Don and HO in the same sentence with no mention of Imus!

He sang this great love song- not sure of the name but I think it was called I'll remember you or something like that. Great song.

May he rest in peace.

It gets worse, the older that you get. No escape from the state of confusion I'm in.

Don Ho did weekly club gigs in Waikiki right up until his passing.
His home is not too far from mine.
He was suffering from heart trouble over the past several years.
I last saw him perform at the NFL Pro Bowl halftime show, he sang Tiny Bubbles with American Idol finalist, and another Hawaii native, Jasmine Trias.

R.I.P.
Don Ho

Several years ago, a friend and I were out strolling in Greenwich Village, NYC on a warm summer night. My friend was wearing a brightly colored Hawaiian shirt. We stopped and joined a small crowd of people who were watching a ventriloquist perform and with a very foul-mouthed dummy.

While the ventriloquist was looking the other way, the dummy turned towards us and looked at my friend. "Nice shirt," said the dummy. "What ya do?... Blow Don Ho?"

True story: When I was a teenager flying from Japan to Hawaii in 1976, drinking liquor underage on the airline, some guy drinking next to me said, "You know Don Ho is dying." I said, "We all are." He said, "No really, I hear he's dying of cancer or something." We were silent for a few minutes.........turns out the guy was mistaken I guess.......unless he was referring to a really, really slow death....

This has only the slightest relation to Don Ho, (RIP) who was more of a lounge singer, but it does deal with a Hawaiian musician:

On Friday I saw Ledward Kaapana--an incredible slack key guitarist--at McCabes in Santa Monica. Led is the most matter-of-fact virtuoso I've ever seen. His casual attitude while he pours out one brilliant, jaw-dropping performance (especially during his duets with Mike Kaawa) after another is something that no fan of the guitar should miss,

If he's in your area during this tour of the mainland, do yourself a huge favor and check it out.

Funny story Lukester, but I think you were right the first time. "We all are".........But Don Ho went on for another 30 years. Hopefully we all will.

....that's classic.....pure genious, especially the part about the dummy looking at you while the ventriloquist was looking away, as though he has a mind of his own.....

The Bonanza set - tourist attraction - has closed. Condominiums now.
