have been playing my blues since 1962, ever since "what a shame" came out.

Hard to beat Memphis as the capital of American music, including blues and rock and roll (and country to some extent since Johnny Cash started there on Sun).

I haven't made it to the blues museum in Clarsdale yet, I think it's only an hour, maybe hour and a half, south of Memphis off highway 61 (of course!).

I've always thought of New Orleans as being the home of the blues and jazz.

N.O. is the home of jazz, but I think rural Mississippi is the home of blues.

N.O. is in southeast Louisiana, but less than an hour drive from coastal Mississippi. Clarksdale is in northwestern Mississippi, closer to Memphis and about a six or seven hour drive from New Orleans.

There's only ONE answer. The Capital of the Blues is Clarksdale, as Edith Grove already stated. The question doesn't ask about cities/places that have Blues influences and such. Sorry kids, that's it, over and out....

I thought bleedin' 'earts were for country & western lovers. You know, bleedin' 'earts, dead dogs, cryin' in your beer, that kind of stuff.

I must say though, I heard some ferkin' fantastic blues and jazz when I was in New Orleans in 2002 and met some amazing people. I really learned what music is all about during that trip...

Watching the hurricane events unfold a few years later was very sad!!!

I would imagine you probably visited the French Quarter (aka Vieux Carre) while you were here. I live one block off Bourbon Street.

The F.Q. is the original city of N.O. founded by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville in 1718. With the advice of the local natives, Bienville situated the city on the highest ground on the banks of the Mississippi. The city expanded over the years by filling in the surrounding swamp land. Eighty per cent of the city flooded when the levees broke, but the F.Q. and most of the land along the river stayed high and dry.

If you can't get enough N.O. music, check out [www.wwoz.org] and click on "listen to WWOZ."

Clarksdale and the surrounding areas of the Mississippi Delta are hugely important, central, etc. Hugely.

But the impulse to designate Clarksdale as the undisputed capital of Delta Blues and the Delta tradition as the central fact of the music comes in large part from our orientation as Stones fans.

Whatever else Clarksdale is, it's most famous as the birthplace of Muddy Waters. And Muddy's journey to Chicago and his amplification of the blues and his turning "Catfish Blues" into "Rollin' Stone" has special importance for us that shouldn't obscure all the other people and places that comprise the history of the blues. Just think of Blind Willie McTell and the Piedmont Style...

But having said all that, I'd rank Clarksdale, Memphis and Chicago about equally. Maybe Memphis takes it as the "way station" between the Country Blues of the Delta and the Electric Blues of Chicago.

I want to know what Rockman thinks...

I once visited Blues Museum years and years ago.
I don't remember it was Clarksdale or Jackson, Mississippi.
I bought some records of unknown blues musician there and after that I passed over Yazoo City. That city had a flavor of blues.
"O Brother, Where Art Thou? by The Coen Brothers" echos the sentiments of me.
