The most underrated song from every Stones studio album
Posted by: stickydion ()
Date: April 6, 2007 09:45

IMO all these song deserve more appreciation...

I select only one from each album- they could be much more, of course. Let’s start in 1968...

Dear Doctor (1968)
You Got The Silver (1969)
Moonlight Mile (1971)
Torn And Frayed (1972)
100 Years Ago (1973) - IMO the entire GHS album is extremely underrated…
Dance Little Sister (1974)
Fool To Cry (1976)
Some Girls (1978)
Down In The Hole (1980)
No Use In Crying (1981)
Tie You Up (1983)
Fight (1986)
Hold On To Your Hat (1989)
Blinded By Rainbows (1994)
Too Tight (1997)
It Won’t Take Long (2005)

Your catalogue?

I agree with you about GHS.

I think IORR was underrated too.

(Sorry I'm not sticking to the topic!)

68- prodigal son
69- love in vain
71- moonlight mile
72- torn and frayed
73- dancing with mr. d
74- time waits for no one
76- toss up between fool to cry and hot stuff
78- before they make me run
80- all about you
81- hang fire
83- all the way down
86- harlem shuffle
89- blinded by love (great ballad)
94- toss up between blinded by rainbows and the worst
97- too tight
2005- streets of love

Frank M, Prodigal Son and Blinded By Love were my #2 choices for 1968 and 1989! As for #2 from 1973, i vacillate between Dancing With Mr D and 100 Years Ago...

But why do you consider Time Waits For Noone as underrated song? I think it's the most "famous" album's track, after IORR...

For ten reasons. First: i got tired of thinking more! The rest nine reasons are unimporant...

Now, Gazza, i expect your catalogue. Since the beginning, of course...

never thought too much of Blue Turn To Grey until I saw video sequence of Brians funeral using this song as background music (in 25x5?) since then it is one of my favourites.

Ok..it'll keep me occupied in my lunchbreak. Its tricky because there are some songs that are big fan favourites but which arent as widely known as they should be, and some that rarely get mentioned even on fan forums, so here goes :

the Rolling Stones - King Bee
No. 2 - You cant catch me (their most underrated song EVER IMO)
Out of Our heads (UK) - Mercy Mercy
(I'll add 'Decembers Children' here even though its a US album, just to mention "Look what youve done" which is a criminally overlooked gem)
Aftermath - Out of Time (underrated maybe by the band because theyve NEVER played it!)
Between the Buttons - Complicated
Satanic Majesties - 2000 Man
Beggars Banquet - Factory Girl
Let It Bleed - Monkey Man (I could be a smartarse and say "Gimme Shelter" is underrated by anyone who doesnt agree that its the greatest record they ever made)
Sticky Fingers - Moonlight Mile (underrated by the unwashed masses)
Exile On Main Street - Torn and Frayed (I think most Stones fans by now are warming as to how great 'Let it loose' is..it even took ME a few years to appreciate it properly)
Goats Head Soup - Winter (same reason as for Moonlight Mile). Otherwise, 'Comin Down again'
IORR - Dance little sister (everyone justifiably raves about TWFNO or Fingerprint File, but this is a terrific rocker which has been criminally overlooked as a live song and which I think would bring the house down. Its been scientifically proven to be impossible to remain still when this song is being played)
Black and Blue - Cherry Oh Baby. (By no stretch is it the best song on the album, but I cant see the reason for the widespread antipathy towards it. It has a ramshackle charm)
Some Girls - Just My Imagination (one of the band's greatest covers, even though it doesnt beat the original. The piece at the end of the bridge when Mick sings "she doesnt even know..." and Keith sings "just my imagination" before Mick finishes the line is my favourite part of the whole album. (Honourable mention - Everything is turning to Gold, which was left off the album for Sucking in the 70s)

Emotional Rescue - Where the Boys Go. One of the Stones best rockers ever. With the entire band on top form. ("Dance Part 2" left off the album for 'sucking in the 70's' is also worth mentioning)

Tattoo You - My favourite track is "Slave", followed by "Worried about you", but then I think most fans love these. So, I'll plump for "No Use in crying".

Undercover - Feel On Baby
Dirty Work - Sleep Tonight
Steel Wheels - Continental Drift, of course.
Voodoo Lounge - Thru & Thru (That bit after the drums kick in and keith sings 'we're OOOOOOHHHHH-pen 24 hours, baby' makes me shiver every time. It sounds more of a threat than an offer. )
Bridges to Babylon - Anybody seen My Baby. It gets derided by many, but Waddy Wachtel's guitar coda at the end is worth the price of the album on its own. keith's two closers are gorgeous too, and I've never understood the lack of appreciation for 'Always suffering' which is a beautiful song with a delicious solo at the end.
A Bigger Bang - Biggest Mistake. Up there with LIND and Dangerous Beauty as the standouts for me, but one which is more overlooked.

I don't understand how songs can be underrated from a band that has sold over 150 million albums.

Not only underrated (never understood what that means) but also quite often bashed, yet great favorites of mine!

1. Good times, bad times (great blues, it catches the feel!)
2. Yesterday's papers (great opener of a great album)
3. Have you seen your mother baby ... (how can you not love this!)
4. Sing this song all together pt. 2 (another great one. Its a mess, but with style. There are so many great ideas in it)
5. The London Bach Choir part of You Can't Always get ... (well, I like it!)
6. I just want to see his face (it groooves, it's what exile is all about!)
7. Can you hear the music (one of the best tracks on GHS. I instantly loved it)
8. Dance little sister (reason why I love this band. Rythm-naked!
9. Melody (one of jaggers best vocals ever, masterpiece interaction between keith and preston)
10. Lies (my no 1 choice from girls would have been Miss you, but this is bashed a lot but also has its fans, so I will stand up for lies, that NOBODY likes!, but I do)
11. Let Me Go (the slow version. never get tired of it)
12. Neighbours (again to explain why I like it for me is to explain why I like the stones)
13. Feel on Baby (huge groove out of a huge album!)
14. Back to Zero (I grew some sort of affection for this ugly little boy. If you look at it it ain't bad at all!)
15. Rock and a hard place (see miss you)
16. Suck on the jugular (one of the few decent tracks from an undecent record)
17. seen my baby (I admit I was embarassed to admit I liked it, now I don't care!)
18. look what the cat dragged in (how I want them to be)

Westlife have had 11 UK number ones - three more than the Stones

Would you say THEY are underrated due to the fact theyre commercially successful?

Thanks Gaz. FINALLY a guy who took the trouble to write all the albms down so I could copy and paste (That's how lazy I am).

> The Rolling Stones - Can I Get A Witness.
> No. 2 - You Can't Catch Me (One of the first tracks I loved).
> Out of Our heads - Mercy Mercy.
> Aftermath - Going Home and of course High And Dry.
> Between the Buttons - Something Happened To Me Yesterday.
> Satanic Majesties - Citadel.
> Beggars Banquet - Prodigal Son.
> Let It Bleed - Let It Bleed (Even though they first showed how good this can be on Stripped).
> Sticky Fingers - I Got The Blues.
> Exile On Main Street - Rocks Off (Best one on there and it simply cannot be praised enough).
> Goats Head Soup - 100 Years Ago.
> IORR - Dance Little Sister (Right behind ya' Gaz).
> Black and Blue - Cherry Oh Baby and Melody.
> Some Girls - Faraway Eyes (Can't be praised enough).
> Emotional Rescue - Let Me Go (Bad songs on this one, so I might as well pick one. The guitars deserved a better fate than these songs).
> Tattoo You - Hang Fire.
> Undercover - Undercover Of The Night (Lacks airplay, but it's a great one).
> Dirty Work - One Hit (To The Body) (Love it, and it's a great one to hear on a very weak album).
> Steel Wheels - Break The Spell.
> Voodoo Lounge - New Faces and Moon Is Up.
> Bridges to Babylon - Already Over Me.
> A Bigger Bang - Driving Too Fast and Look What The Cat Dragged In.

I would say they are overrated. But really, you record an album of ten songs like Beggars, two of the tracks are hits so big you become legendary on the spot and you sell something like 15 million copies of the album. The album becomes a landmark in Rock history, and the band goes on for the next 40 years to earn a gazzilion dollars. How can any of the songs on this album be underrated?

I agree with 90% of your list Gazza, very good description of Dance Little Sister, that song has been a favourite ever since I was born.
Where THe Boys Go & Sleep Tonight....couldn't be any other from those albums. The only one that's close would be Down In The Hole.

Matthijs, to me it is very obvious that all this is related to the album. You have a number of songs on an album, the question is: which of those songs on this album is the most underrated. So, this means, it can also be a song that is rated high, as long as you think it is not rated high enough compared to the others...

But I guess you know that, and just wanted to post that they are all overrated?

Well, why not.

Exactly..and certainly over-achieving. So commercial success doesnt mean something cant be underrated.

Depends who's doing the "rating".

1) The Stones themselves dont even seem to rate some of these songs or albums, going by their reluctance to take a chance on playing them. How many times has Jagger said that Exile is overrated for goodness sake?

2) Critics might rave about an album like Beggars, but they'll tend to focus on highlighting the same two or three songs. Whilst no one is disputing the album's overall quality, you very rarely see songs like No Expectations or Factory Girl singled out for high praise. So, they're 'under rated' even if the album tends to be critically lauded.

3) fans in general - whether they have a casual knowledge or appreciation of the band's work or whether they're loonies like us who analyse everything in absurd minute detail - also tend to focus on certain songs. I picked Factory Girl because thats a song that few people tend to mention on sites like this.

huh? Why would you think that? I think the Stones have gotten just exactly what they earn: over 150 million of album sales, and the richest and biggest band in the world. They have all the credit they could want. The Stones simply are not overrated nor underrated.

There's maybe two albums that are a but underrated in the sense of "they should have had more succes", and that's Undercover and Wandering Spirit. Both are -especially in hindsight- great albums that should have sold a lot more and should have recieved more crdibility when they were released.

Ah, Matthijs, if that's what you meant... Different story. I thought you just wanted to post that, because you missed the point of the thread, which I thought was very obvious and therefore almost not to miss: the underrating of songs related to other songs on each album. No offense meant.
