Do the stones have a must do song
Posted by: Rickster ()

It seems just about everyone has at least one song that must be played live in concert. For example say Bob Seger its Old Time rock and Roll. Just woundering what song must the Stones do live if you look at there set list it looks like Brown Sugar. But allot of people say they don't need to play it every show. So do they have a must do.

They don't have a "must do song." They have "must do songS"

and those are:

JJF
BS
& Tumbling Dice

So that means if you went to see them and they left out at least one of these songs you would be upset.

how you came that logical conclusion, i'm not sure . . . i'm talking about what are conventionally considered (and just plain truly) the stones' must play tunes.

Is this a "must do warhorse" thread? I'm cornfused.

Not just war horses just a question as to if they have a song that everyone thinks must be performed live or they would not be happy. I guess trying to get an answer to this will be hard since there are so many hits and people are tired of some of them. I personall can't think of one that is an a must do I mean if they leave Brown Sugar out i won't be upset but I guess they tink people will because they play it every show.

SMU is played as much as any I suppose.... Though I wouldn't include it in 'my' set.

In my ears related to the issue of What is a warhorse:
Brown Sugar.
Probably also JJF.

A lot of mainstream fans would probably feel short-changed if Satisfaction wasn't performed.

Honky Tonk Women.

I'm looking forward to whatever they play, but certain songs add something even more special: the power of JJF is always surprising, and Midnight Rambler is worth the ticket on its own. Midnight Rambler is really the song I'm looking forward too, and the essence of a Stones live experience. Upset when it is not played? No, but it will make me think of buying tickets to another show...

Songs that do not do me very much are Miss You and Start Me Up. I was very happy with You Can't Always Get What You Want this tour, I thought it wouldn't do me anything, but I think they do a strong version this tour: powerful guitars, which surprised me.

JJF, Honky Tonk Woman and Brown Sugar

The problem for many folks is that they appear to have about a dozen "must do" songs !
Hence the long tradition of "set list moaning" ;^)

I wouldn't be upset in the slightest to see a Stones show without those three songs.......

I can go along with that. I think I (and most serious fans) could make up a personal setlist that would contain almost no 'hits'and enjoy the show just as much if not more. Never happen of course.

Brown Sugar, though not from personal preferences.

Start me up has been left out of a few shows over the last couple of tours, or was it just the licks theatre shows? Also Tumbling Dice was missing from some of the licks theatre shows, was it not...? And obviously satisfaction was not on the no security tour.

So I would guess that Brown Sugar and Jumping Jack Flash are pretty much the only two. Was Honky-Tonk Women left out of any shows over the last two or three tours?

Has nobody mentioned You Got Me Rocking ?

Mick has a must-do moment with the harmonica. It's almost criminal not to enjoy the crowd for a brief showcase of one of his greatest talents...

Jelle

Edit: the same could be said about Ronnie and his lapsteel.... But that's not very likely...

Yes I do think they play You Got Me Rocking because they simply like to play that one, themselves.

three quarters of a million of them managed to survive without it throughout the No Security tour - and the song was only performed about 9 times between 1971 and 1981.

The notion that any song is too sacred to be rested occasionally is plain daft, They have enough great and recognisable songs to make up for it if they do.
