Definitive 200 (warning - this is a list thread)
Posted by: WMiller ()
Date: March 12, 2007 22:02

We haven't had a good (if there is such a thing) list thread for quite some time, so here goes one!

The Rolling Stones are represented by 4 selections (as many here would predict, the "Golden Era" of BB thru Exile).

Would have been nice to see Ya-Ya's there as well. They include soundtracks, but apparently, no Live releases.

I haven't studied the list, and am not a huge fan of theirs, but I'm kinda surprised that no CCR releases appear. That's the main artist's ommission that caught my eye.

For the jazz fans, Dave Brubeck has a release on the list. I'm not a listener of jazz, so I don't know whether it's warranted or not. I'd be curious to hear comments on this entry.

The Definitie 200 is a joint promotion between NARM and the RR Hall of Fame. The Definitive 200 list was chosen by a committee within NARM, representing a cross-section of retailers from around the country. NARM is the trade association of music retailers, representing more than 7,000 physical outlets across the U.S., along with online stores. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a museum in Cleveland and a foundation in New York.

Well Leon Russell's album, Carney, is omitted

I see the Eagle's "Hell Freezes Over" is on the list....isn't that a live album?

Like with any list there are some questionable entries.....but there are some great entries too.

I missed that one. In that case, I don't take the exclusion of Ya-Ya's so easily.

The do have a pretty good cross section - and like you say, about 1/3 of the list is very debatable.

I know this list was not done with us in mind but------3 Dixie Chick albums before Beggars Banquet? Was this list sales driven? I guess in part it has to be. But------ Cheers Y'all

Maybe, but in that case Exile and Highway 61 woulnt be in the top ten. Definite;y there for all the right reasons.

Yet another tired, pointless list made up of the predictable, the unbelievable and the downright bullshit. Many great works in there doubtless but we already know them anyway.
When these albums are repackaged they'll carry a little sticker saying "A Definitive 200 Classic as voted by NARM" or similar.
Any list such as this that contains the soundtrack to 'Titanic' and omits someone like Scott Walker imo is compiled by people who may be able to spew sales figures but really don't know much about music.

Sorry just had to get that off my chest.

This is a strange list. The first half, although curious in points, seems to go the usual route following the "art", then the second half seems only sales derived. I mean...Creed, Live, Will Smith ???

I read this article in the paper. Even the writer acknowledged the omission of "Blonde On Blonde" and "Live At The Apollo". WTF?

the first half isnt sales derived? Well over half of the top 25 have sold over 10 million copies and it includes pretty much every studio album thats sold over 20 million

glad ya did.
list is nonsense for the most part, which i guess WmMiller warned about from the start;
...still, i find it silly in historical context, and artistic resonance...shameful if one thinks about it much, which i won't.
they're bound to get some good ones in there on a list of 200 but man, the order and most of the selections...nahhh...just say no.

Zack, why would you need anything from the Kinks catalog when we've got Jewel there so highly placed, bringing us all that great and deep writing, the unbelievable juxtaposition of lyrical poetry and incredible melody she is so famous for...not to mention her many years of groundbreaking excitement as a stage performer and master innovative hit artist. for decades...i mean, really Zack...we've still got Jewel to rely on...why live in the past with your sense of outrage...snap out of it...sigh....
