What do you think of Bill's solo output?

Lately, I've been getting into the Silent Stone's line of solo work, and I must say I am impressed, Monkey Grip and his self-titled one are great albums. Hell, I even like Stuff and Stone Alone. And I actually think his voice isn't as bad as everyone says it is.

What do you guys think?

his voice is soooooo bad it makes me cry..its almost like he worked at making it sound bad..just plain flat, dull and very weak...
i love bill and love the music he wrote..all his album were great except his singing....he should have found someone to sing his music...wow..then his albums would all be big hits!

For the most part, "shite" but each to their own. The self titled one isnt too bad, though but theres no question that had he not been a Stone I'd never have listened to it.

The Rhythm Kings stuff is more listenable, though.

I saw him in concert in 2001.
There was 2 clouds of smoke in that fine venue. One from Bill Wyman, and one from my friend next to me, throughout the show.
I must say...it was a dull event, even though it's always nice to see Bill.

I'd rather listen to Ringo Starr's solo albums.

Actually, i'd rather listen to the sound of animals being slaughtered. Awesome bass player, and great that he kept so many notes / records of the history of the stones, but not a great solo artist.

i am a huge, huge wyman fan; and i try very very hard NOT to ever, ever think about bill's solo output. ever.
mr. jimmy above preferring to hear 'animals slaughtered' lol rather than bill's solos stuff is being way too kind.
i innocently happen to see a bit of the oh suzanne video once and it took me months to get over it...i'm just starting solid foods again now.

One of the best solo Stone tracks ever is Bill's song "Pussy" from Monkey Grip...

I loved Bill's bass playing with the Stones. Sadly, I never hear the same quality of playing on his solo albums. I certainly don't hear anything approaching the JJF riff he believes he wrote, either. Monkey Grip and Stone Alone are both roots novelty records and despite "I Wanna Get Me a Gun" being a guilty pleasure, I don't rate either of them highly. The self-titled third album is his best by a long shot with at least three listenable pop songs and the only really cringe-worthy moment being "Girls." Mel Collins rescues "Jump Up" from sharing the same fate. Songs like "Rio de Janerio" show as much life as his stage manner. Stuff from 1992 (or 1988, if we're being honest), tries hard to match the third album but misses. The title track is almost listenable. "Like a Knife" is so cliched, it could have come from an 80s Pop Songwriting 101 course and sadly, that's the second best track. Worst of all are the dreadful cover versions. The song selection isn't bad, its the performances. He did far better with the covers on Stone Alone. Stuff is the least of the four to my ears. "Mama Rap" which shamefully steals a line from "Stray Cat Blues" also tries to match the laughable dirty old man quality of "Pussy" or "Peanut Butter Time" on his first two solo albums but just makes him sound rather pathetic and perhaps in need of counseling. Nice to know Suzanne did come back, I suppose.

Hm I think you're missing a point here. Bill can't be compared to the Stones. When I see the Come back Suzanna video I actually love it. It has some new wave touches and self irony that i like. He's a geek and and a horny old man and yet cool and he knows it.

never been a BW fan...although I do sort of like IN ANOTHER LAND.

re: the earlier suggestion that Bill's playing is better on Stones albums than BW solo albums........is it possible that Keith or Ronnie or Mick Taylor would re-do Bill's "contribution"...in the same way that Paul McCartney was known to re-do Ringo's drums...?? Just wondering? If they had...would BW be able to hear the difference.

IORR............but I like it!

Agreed. Yes, Keith, Mr. Taylor, and Ronnie all played bass at various times, but Bill's sound was evident from the IBC demos through Steel Wheels. I'm not interested in bashing Daryl, but I do miss Bill's contribution to the band.

Paul McCartney didn´t re-do any drumming. Where have you heard that? Utter bull.
He played the drums on two tracks on the White Album and on the Ballad of John and Yoko, but he surely didn´t re-do anything.

I have to say that video always makes me laugh too.

It's hard to get into him because much of it is just so dreadful. Downhill. First one is the best withg two solid sides of music. "Stone Alone" is terrible because of the cutesy factor. PointerSisters overkill!
The je suis Rockstar album was okay too. "Stuff" is the worst.
all the Rhythm Kings is one big lukewarm snoozeer.

Well, to be honest, I don't care too much about Bill's solo material. The only disc from his solo career that I've listened to so far, in parts, has been that Rhythm Kings disc, on which George Harrison has a guitar guest appearance. The album didn't sound too interesting to me. But I don't agree with those of you who criticise Bill's voice. He sounded perfectly fine on that disc, so I thought why does he have all those other lead singers in Rhythm Kings after all? Yes, giving somebody like Beverley Skeete a microphone is something which is hard to resist, but Bill could have filled his latter day albums with his own vocals just as well.

Do you think Bill sits by his mailbox waiting for his one and only Rolling Stones songwriter royalty check for "IN ANOTHER LAND"?
