Anybody else hate rock songs about rock music?
Posted by: Forty Niks ()

There are certain 'genres' of rock music that I simply can't abide by. The driving anthem, for instance, has almost grated yours truly. Ditto for "born to . . .something" songs, patriotic songs, and anything by The Who.

But one particular genre of rock songs sinks deeper into the dregs than all others: rock songs abour rock music. Think of all the crude fist-pumping caveman stomps this genre has brought to the world: I Love Rock 'N Roll, Rock N' Roll All Night, and even, perish the thought, You Got Me Rocking!

There is, however, an exception: the brilliant It's Only Rock N' Roll. However, IORR isn't *really* about rock music: its more about the pressures of being a rock star.

Anyway, who else is with me on calling for a moritarium on rock songs abour rock music?

nah.
everybody repeat after me:
hail, hail rock & roll - deliver me from the days of old
long live rock & roll - the beat of the drums, loud and bold
rock, rock, rock & roll - the feeling is there, body and sssoul

FN, you abuse your argument by picking the weakest examples of the form. Try Lou Reed's "Rock & Roll," the entire Ziggy Stardust album, or any song by Ian Hunter.

Are you serious? No wonder it's hard to have an interesting conversation on the internet.

I suppose we could say that what Forty Niks is really complaining about is just that: caricatures, or anthems of rock. I see his point. There are a lot of songs about the rock 'n' roll lifestyle and other related things, but there are also those songs that seem to be about nothing other than rock itself, or almost nothing else.

A lyric like "Hey hey, you got me rockin' now" does sound kind of stupid on it's own. Led Zep's "It's been a long time since I rock 'n' rolled" is also kinda silly, even though I really like that song as a whole.

Rock is not the only genre that seem to be all about itself at it's most clichéd moments. Just look at the funk ... every third song by Funkadelic is about funk itself ("We Want The Funk"), or about someone trying to understand the funk ("Cholly"), or complaining about people who don't funk well enough ("P.Funk Wants to get Funked Up"). And then there's the blues... how many times have you heard someone telling you he/she got the blues for the twelfth time?

I see your point Forty Niks,
there's a lots of poor lyrics in pop/rock music, and I don't really mind, but once the poor lyrics is about "playing/loving rock'n roll", I can't overlook it anymore, the whole day is ruined.
10% of the R&R-theme songs are great, like IORR

Well sometimes people need a song title more digestible than:
"Neon Meate Dream Of A Octafish,"
"Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)" or
"Moribund The Burgermeister"

Fortyniks. If all you want to do is argue than you just lsot what little credibility you started with. But to answer your question. NO,I like Rock & Roll. I think their has been a lot of good, fun songs written about R&R and life on the road over the years. Written by people who have actually lived the rock & roll life. Yeah that stuff is interesting.imho

Just to throw you a bone though. I agree about YGMR. Weak song.

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

if you had said "i hate dumb crude songs about rock & roll" maybe i could've gotten into it,
but throwing out the whole rock & roll theme is going too far. on the other hand, i hate Steven Spielberg
for making such inane films on themes that were great before he got ahold of them - dinosaurs, for example -
so who am i to talk.

ps: i like YGMR - who cares what the words are?! although i do find that raggedy dog endearing -
it could've helped, it's true. :E

Rock and Roll Music- Chuck Berry
Rock and Roll Fantasy- The Kinks

All are great tunes about our passion.

i agree but also don't like IORR and YGMR for that reason too...

a little OT: i hate songs with titles that are cliches - such as "rock and a hard place"

little credibility? this from a man who can't even get the lyrics in his user name correct . . .

also, luke my friend, (thanks for recognizing me, by the way!) perhaps hate was not the right word.

from now on i'll stick with loathe.

There are exceptions.

Forty Niks:
Did you know that the "rocking" word in YGMR isn't about rock 'n roll? It's about a state of mind the person in the song is in...

Let's face it Twisted Sister's I wanna Rock is an exception too.

Ramones Rock n' Roll High School I like though and Let There Be Rock by AC/DC.

I loathe songs about the Blues. When they go "I got them ..blank..blues again"

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

That sort of lyric went dead after Muddy, R Johnson and the like. They could do it in the cool way. Now we see wannabees trying to do it even though it sucks.

Would you put Tim Curry's I Do The Rock in this category? I still love that tune!

Old Time Rock and Roll (good, but overplayed)
R'n'R Fantasy - Bad Co (forced sounding)

Some good
Whiskey R'n'R
Rock Music - Jefferson Starship
Summer of 69
Sweet Little 16
Sweet Little Rock and Roller - Berry, Faces, New Barbarians
Rockawhile - Keef

Rockawhile is about rock music?! jeepers: not to my ears.
i wouldn't say YGMR is about rock music either.

Whatever, sssoul! They have the word "Rock" in them. Please share your great knowledge with us.

Back up to your usual trashing of all of my posts I see. Ever notice that I don't reply to your posts (this one excepted)? There's a reason.

LoFL! easy there - i don't follow your posts either, dear, let alone make any habit of "trashing" them.
but since you ask so nicely: yeah, to me not every song that has the word "rock" in it is about rock music.
does it matter? ... didn't think so. :E
