Don't buy it. 2200€ is way too much and the quality of Gibson during the 80ies was not really at a high level.

That's a bit of a myth, take each guitar as it comes...

The price is too much though!

I've got a Standard from about '84 and it hasn't let me down at all over the last twenty-odd years.

I've heard that the recent Gibsons are the ones to watch out for, since they really stepped up production over the last couple of years and quality control has become sloppy - loose screws, bad paint jobs, lousy binding...

Supposedly this was all due to some distribution deal they set up with Guitar Center.

That said, $2200 is a TON of money, especially considering how strong the pound is these days. You can probably find one for less if you look around.

smile: it's 2200 euros, not pounds or dollars - a ton of money anyway

It's certainly a bit steep.

But I agree with His Majesty.
Gibson's reputation with respect to the 70s and 80's production is a bit iffy ...but there were still plenty of very nice guitars produced.
The issue was two fold really. Quality control was certainly not what it should have been and certain production changes were made in those years which rather offended a lot of purists.
The upshot is the perceived wisdom that all Gibsons produced in that "Norlin era" of production and shortly thereafter are crap.
This is not true. Just be careful to seek out the good ones ;^)

Point is that it would be common sense to consider a '80s les paul only as a used guitar. Instead what's happening is that the "vintage" aura is now applied also to these productions, hence the prices are going up.

Crazy market. Crazy guitarists.

An avarage '90s LP is just as good (if not better) than a 80s, but it would cost you much less.

Way, way too much money. Definitely look around, you will do better than that.

Way too much for an 1981 Les paul Paul. For that kind of money you could get a used Historic (at least here in California) which are grea guitars!

Not an used '59 Historic! Prices are in the rise since Gibson raised their prices and changed their internet policy, and especially '58's with flame tops are on the rise.

Anyways, in my very personal and humble opinion -the guitars Gibson is producing for the last couple of years (say from 2001 on) are just the best ever guitars the company has ever put out. This includes both the "standard" line and the "historic" line. I would even go as far to say that the Historic '59 LP they produce since 2003 is a better instrument than the the average original '59. Also, in my very humble opinion, the guitars made by both fender and Gibson between 1977 and 1984 are just total crap compared to today's production. They're o.k. guitars, but I take any Japanese Fender made in the last 2 years over any late '70's Fender, without a doubt. For 2200 euro's I would buy myself an excellent new LP Standard (take the '50's neck, it is just so much better once you get used to it), and keep the change for a nice amp like a Cornford Harlequin, a Fuchs Lucky 7 or a Fargen Miniplex.

People these days are really stuck on "vintage". As long as it's expensive, it must be good seems to be the credo. If you pay $9000 for a battered '58 LP Junior Double Cut it simply "must" have "that" vintage mojo. We all forgot that this $9000 guitar was worth $500 ten years ago and didn't have "that" mojo. If I'd own a genuine '58 LP I would also say it sounds better than the '58 Historic. But I also know I wouldn't take the Pepsi test...

Thank you friends, you think same as I do. I won't buy it, I think that buying new Fender american vintage telecaster '52 reissue for 1700 € is much better. And it's absolutely Stones guitar!

Now I play Fender Stratocaster, modified by my taste, and with suggestions of the greatest guita<rist in my country for last 40+ years.

The '58 and '59s I would agree but the '57 gold tops or even the P90 equipped 54-56 reissues could be had for relatively much less and they play and sound every bit as well as the more expensive sunburst models.

Where do you live? You can buy at Ebay, it'll cost you $100 shipping but it still be cheaper than new.

I live in Zagreb, Croatia , state of 4 millions of people. I know about possibility of buying it by ebay, but the biggest problem for me is buying second hand guitar before I see it and try it.

Yes, I can imagine that is a problem. You could consider driving to Milan or Munich, it still save you money. But, as the differences are not really that big since they're all quite good, you could take the plunge. But that's up to you of course.
