Not an used '59 Historic! Prices are in the rise since Gibson raised their prices and changed their internet policy, and especially '58's with flame tops are on the rise.
Anyways, in my very personal and humble opinion -the guitars Gibson is producing for the last couple of years (say from 2001 on) are just the best ever guitars the company has ever put out. This includes both the "standard" line and the "historic" line. I would even go as far to say that the Historic '59 LP they produce since 2003 is a better instrument than the the average original '59. Also, in my very humble opinion, the guitars made by both fender and Gibson between 1977 and 1984 are just total crap compared to today's production. They're o.k. guitars, but I take any Japanese Fender made in the last 2 years over any late '70's Fender, without a doubt. For 2200 euro's I would buy myself an excellent new LP Standard (take the '50's neck, it is just so much better once you get used to it), and keep the change for a nice amp like a Cornford Harlequin, a Fuchs Lucky 7 or a Fargen Miniplex.
People these days are really stuck on "vintage". As long as it's expensive, it must be good seems to be the credo. If you pay $9000 for a battered '58 LP Junior Double Cut it simply "must" have "that" vintage mojo. We all forgot that this $9000 guitar was worth $500 ten years ago and didn't have "that" mojo. If I'd own a genuine '58 LP I would also say it sounds better than the '58 Historic. But I also know I wouldn't take the Pepsi test...
