I've always liked this song...
Have they ever played it live?
(I doubt it)

No.

It is a great song, and superbly produced, yet oddly, was left off of so many best-of compilations.

acc to keno:
"Recorded in November & December, 1966. Released as US Single on August 18, 1967
Lead Vocal: Mick Jagger Acoustic Guitar: Keith Richards Harpsichord: Brian Jones Saxophone & Oboe: Brian Jones Bass: Bill Wyman Drums: Charlie Watts Organ: Ian Stewart Backing Vocals: Mick Jagger, John Lennon & Paul McCartney (?)"

dosen't this show that brian was still integral, revelant and active thru the very end of '66 minimally? oboe, harpsichord and sax on this one.

wassup with the john/paul thing? (the "?" is also from keno.)
whatever, the harmonies are delicious...i love that tune...everything about it.
another 'lost' gem, as good as a lot of the top notch stuff that they DO feature, release and perform imo.
goes from unbelievably sweet and genuinely poetic to some fierce stuff from mick...really a pop production masterpiece when you think about it and it rocks. and charlie, as if this is any kind of 'news' here, is fabulous.

and interesting to me, another grand stones classic, ala studio sfm, with nary an electric git...fascinating band. deep shit.

Brian plays soprano saxophone, no oboe on this track.

Ian Stewart playing on a tune like this? Very much doubt it! More likely to be Jack Nitszche and/or Brian on the keys, maybe even Keith.

timeisonourside.com has it this way:

Probable line-up:

Drums: Charlie Watts
Bass: Bill Wyman
Acoustic guitar: Keith Richards
Lead vocal: Mick Jagger
Background vocals: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, John Lennon & Paul McCartney
Harpsichord: Brian Jones or Nicky Hopkins
Organ: Ian Stewart
Maracas: Brian Jones
Saxophone: Brian Jones

If they tried "She's A Rainbow", they should try this. I like this one so much, I wanted to name my band "The Dandy Lions".

I was afraid to admit that I liked this tune...
for fear of being derided, if anyone considered it to be just a meager pop ditty that The Stones did.

But hey, they brought back Ruby Tuesday in the 80s... why not Dandelion?

I'm deep in love with their 'pop' tunes from that era...Dandelion, She's A Rainbow, Ruby Tuesday, Back Street Girl, Ride On Baby, Sittin' On A Fence, If You Let Me...there's so many great tunes. But when they performed She's A Rainbow live they hardly nailed it...it sounded quite stiff whereas the studio version was lively and fluid...I am afraid they would not nail Dandelion either if they try. But why not? Just do it, give it a try! It might be a big surpise just like 2000 Light Years From Home in 1989/1990 - another one I never believed they could bring it alive on stage.

Oh Yes... they should bring it on stage @ Summer 2007 ;-)

i love it too. i think it, along with she's a rainbow and 2000 light years should be done in the club/theater setting, though. no echos or distortions.

Love the tune, and Keith's famous demo too.

Anybody else get cocaine references?

"Blow away dandy lines"

"Dandy lines don't care about the time."

The whole thing, really, could be a metaphor for the cocaine-party circuit (or my college education, take your pick!)

It sounds like Nicky Hopkins on piano to me.

Piano?

I meant harpsicord

Sounds too amateurish to be Nicky.

After a close listen to the right channel the Harpsichord parts are far simpler than I first thought so maybe it is Brian after all! :p

A great song particularly well-suited for the B-Stage song...there would be something special about having them project this song in close proximity to each other...

yeah, this one and She's a Rainbow are so exhilarating -
ahh the rush of being in love and on great acid!
i love the guitar version even better, though

Always liked this song---thought it had great production. I too am a fan of their "singles era". I did NOT know that John and Paul sang on this, though after reading the initial post went back and listened to it and you can totally hear it.

As for a live performance, this sounds like it would be pretty difficult to recreate in a live setting--especially the vocals.

Here is

2000 Light Years From Home from 1989.

One of the real shocks, in terms of song selection that I have ever had at a show---by any band. To me the coolest thing about that tour was the fact they really broke out some songs that you could not have possibly guessed--Ruby Tuesday, being another.

To me , apart for the fact I thought they were never going to tour again, was the best part of Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle.

That said, I still cannot see Bernard and Lisa et al recreating those harmonies on Dandelion.
